A message from the Pastor...

We're now a full week into our Pathways to Generosity campaign. You may have heard me say something like, "it's not about the budget" and wondered if that's really true. It really is true. The reason I say it is not about the budget is that I don’t want you to be thinking about the budget when you choose whether and how much to give to Old Mission. I want you to pray about what God would want you to do and be faithful to the response, whatever that is. Then, using the collective response of our members as the most important data point, in the spring the Finance Committee will construct a budget that they believe is a faithful response to God.

It is definitely true that the amount of money we have to work with will affect our ability to fulfill what we believe is our mission.  So will what we spend as a church be the result of your estimates of giving? Yes, of course. But that is secondary to the question for each of us, "God, what would you want me to give?"

Peace,

All Church Spiritual Retreat

Saturday, October 15 from 9:00 am-12:30pm at Old Mission

Life can be busy, hectic and it just seems like we have been carrying around an enormous amount of grief from the last two years. What if there were some spiritual practices that could help? What if there was a way you could feel less anxious, more present, right here and right now?

Join us on Saturday, October 15 from 9:00-12:30, for a time to be refreshed, and reminded that God is very present in the here and now. Dr. Amy Oden will lead us in spiritual practices that we can use in our daily lives. This is a time to connect with God and with each other. We will start the morning off with a light breakfast and a chance to mingle. Then, we will end our time together with lunch.

Dr. Amy G. Oden is a Professor of Early Church History and Spirituality at St. Paul School of Theology. She is also a spiritual director, championing people as they listen for God in their day-to-day life. Amy was born and raised in Oklahoma and is the author of several books. She received her PH.D. In Religious Studies from Southern Methodist University.

Sign up here. Questions? Contact Rev. Karen Nyhart, karen@oldmission.org. Cost: $20.00 per person, childcare is available.

Charge Conference
Our annual Charge Conference will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 6:30 pm. A light supper will be served. RSVP to gay@oldmission.org or 913.262.1040.

Library Gift

In memory of Erma A. Bath, former Old Mission Church librarian, and her son, Thomas D. Bath, a donation has been made to the church library.

The funds will be used to purchase a new computer.  Our thanks to Barbara Blake Bath for this generous gift.

Work Around The Church
Mark your calendar to stay after worship Sunday, October 16,  Noon-3pm. We have many tasks to accomplish on our annual All Church Work Day. Projects include:
  • Remove leaves from window wells.
  • Weeding
  • Trimming redbud trees
  • Clean ceiling air vents
  • Carry items to the dumpster.
Please consider bring the following supplies if you have them: loppers, ladders, saws, buckets, rags
A lunch of grilled brats, chips, and soda will be provided. Come join the fun! Questions: contact Gay in the office, 913.262.1040, or gay@oldmission.org.
OM Fall Festival
This great family friendly event couldn't happen without our volunteers! There are opportunities to help with trunk-or-treat, games, set up, and clean up. Click here to see a complete list of volunteer opportunities.
Angel Tree Callers
One in 28 children across the U.S. has a Mom or Dad behind bars. This year Old Mission will provide Christmas gifts for nearly 200 children in the region, and this process requires volunteers from our congregation.  We are in need of volunteers, beginning in two weeks' time, to help call caregivers, sort and organize gifts, and deliver gifts to local families.  Please contact Anne Cusser - 913.593.1367 or acusser81@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this ministry.  Thank you and God Bless!

Food Donations Needed
Old Mission’s food collection for the Roeland Park Food Pantry continues. Recently they have been giving out 150 grocery bags of food on the 1st and 3rd (and 5th if there is one) Fridays of the month, and each family is given a $10 gift card.

Please consider donating pasta, pasta sauce, cereal and canned meat. You can also choose to donate a $10 Aldi gift card so families can purchase milk, bread and other needed items. Please bring gift cards to the church office and place nonperishables in the large container at the church’s front door. Thank you,

Missions Committee

Fall Festival
Come one, come all to our annual Fall Festival!  There will be parking lot games, carnival games and trunk-or-treat!  Wear your costume -nothing too spooky- and join us on Sunday, October 23, 4-6pm in the west parking lot.
Free Cleaning Wipes
A member of our congregation generously donated 72 boxes of cleaning wipes.  (not sanitation wipes). They are wonderful for cleaning up small messes. If you would like some for your school, work, or home, talk to Pastor Debbie or just go downstairs to the Fellowship Hall Stage area and take what you need. You can take one bottle or several boxes!
