LFPPC Weekly Newsletter
A Note from our Pastors...
Dear LFPPC Church Family,

Pastor Andrea shared a great quote with me this week from a podcast she was listening to. The quote resonated deeply with me: "The culture of an organization is the worst behavior you tolerate." Wow--this hits home for anyone attempting to cultivate a community that flourishes.

Similarly, a few years ago, I read a book by Andy Crouch, a former Intervarsity Campus Minister at Harvard University called "Culture Making: Recovering our Creative Calling". He wrote that, "To be Christian is to stake our lives on this belief: the only cultural goods that ultimately matter are the ones that love creates.”

As we look ahead to LFPPC's next chapter, I wonder what kind of culture do we want to cultivate in our own congregation? How will we treat one another? How will we serve? How will we communicate? How will we welcome others? How will we manage conflict or challenges?

What an honor it is to accompany you all on this journey of faith and life together in this particular season.

Pastor Laura
Meet Our New Office Administrator
After interviewing multiple wonderful candidates, we have discerned God's leading to our very own Jamie Henning to become LFPPC's next PT Office Administrator. Jamie is a long-time church member and has been the "glue" that has supported so many different areas of ministry at LFPPC. Her energy, historical knowledge, creativity, and organizational skills are a huge asset to our staff team. Please note, this position is brand new and has different responsibilities than our previous FT Ministry Coordinator. All pastoral care matters are now overseen by our pastors.
This new position will primarily support our pastors and staff administratively and will have new HR and Financial administrative responsibilities as well. If you would like to know more about this new role's specific job responsibilities you can read the job description here or reach out to Pastor Laura if you have any questions. Jamie starts next Monday in this new role.
Meet Our New Worship Director
Tim Cromeenes has accepted the call to become LFPPC's next PT Worship Director. As you all know, Tim is a man of deep faith, musically gifted, and a joy to serve alongside. His mature understanding and theology of worship will be a blessing to our entire congregation. He also brings a commitment to intergenerational worship and we believe his creative ideas will help form all of us as disciples.
Jazz Vespers 2022-2023 Update
This July we celebrated three years of Jazz Vespers at LFPPC. We thank God for giving us the resources we need to sustain the past three years of this innovative ministry. Last year Jazz Vespers was funded through a grant from the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. We have come to the end of our grant money and are in between being eligible to apply for another round of grant funding. We would like to continue to offer Jazz Vespers at Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church and will be putting forward an opportunity to the church and the Jazz Vespers community to give financial gifts to allow us to continue this ministry until we are able to secure more grant monies. Thank you for prayerfully considering a contribution and be on the lookout for this opportunity coming soon.
Please contact Pastor Andrea (andrea@lfppc.org) with questions.
PICKLEBALL --  We have a net, paddles, and pickle balls stored in a trunk on the playground. Anyone wanting to use them, call Melissa Robertson or Garry Arnold and we can give you the combination to use them. All we ask is for you to put them away and lock up. We hope you can all have fun and get exercise with the equipment. Contact Gary Arnold 206-552-1830.
Friendly Reminder: Our building is a busy shared space. Please re-set each room as you have found it and/or clean any messes your group has made. Our janitorial staff come weekly and their primary responsibilities are trash and vacuuming. The rest is up to all of us. Thanks for your help!
Adult Education
Adult Education is Back! Join us this fall at 9am in Heritage Hall for study and discussion. All are enthusiastically invited and welcome to join us!

What does it mean to be the Church?
A four-week series starting September 18 led by Rod Robinson.

Jesus builds churches.  We will review what Scripture reveals about God’s will for His people, we will study churches presented in the Bible, and we will share about churches we have attended or at least know well.  We will ask questions like “What does God want from us?” “Should all churches have the same goals?” and “What does God want to do for us through His church?”  In one class we will consider a piece of a sermon on the church by Tim Keller.  The class is intended to help and encourage those of us in attendance to fulfill the will of God for us at  LFPPC.

Nehemiah: Rebuilding and God's Calling to Us
Starting October 23rd led by Anne Kalkbrenner. No class on November 27 (Thanksgiving weekend)

The setting of Nehemiah involves a group of people who have been through a huge “pandemic” of change, including a war, an exile, and now an opportunity to return to Jerusalem and rebuild both the physical walls of the city as well as their spiritual identity as a community of believers who seek God. Although the details of our “pandemic” differ – the need for vision and for direction about how to rebuild our lives and once again see God’s Gracious Hand at work in our generation remains the same. Come join us as we learn from the remarkable and humble leadership of a man who believed that nothing is too difficult for God.

Faith in Action
A 3-week series starting December 4th led by Donna Bensley. Do you wonder about the story behind the news? During this portion of the class, we will hear from several people in our community who came to the U.S. from distant places, such as Afghanistan and Ethiopia. They will share their stories and help us put our faith into action.

Pastor Nominating Process
Mid-October Update
LFPPC's Nominations Committee met this week and prayerfully discerned a slate of PNC candidates that reflects the diversity of the congregation. We believe we have pulled together an EXCELLENT slate of 7 candidates. They will be reaching out to those potential nominees shortly to confirm their willingness to serve on the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). Session will also be working this month to plan our congregational discernment process so that all will have an opportunity to participate in collaboratively seeking God's will for our next chapter. The discernment results will be given to the PNC so that they may write a job description/Ministry Information Form that aligns with the gifts and skills needed in our next pastor to do God's will for LFPPC.
*Mark Your Calendars-We are tentatively calling a Special Congregational Meeting for Nov. 6th to elect our Pastor Nominating Committee*
Volunteers Wanted
  • Sound and A/V-- We always need more volunteers to be trained to help with Sunday worship sound as well as the occasional funeral or special event.
  • Godly Play If you would like to serve as a “Shepherd” in the Godly Play room, please contact Pastor Andrea (andrea@lfppc.org
  • Exploring Faith: If you would like to lead once a month in the 4th and 5th grade room, please contact Pastor Andrea (andrea@lfppc.org)
Love Your Neighbor

Food Pantry
Our Little Food Pantry is getting lots of action. Grab-and-Go items seem to be the most popular such as: granola bars, individual size nuts, pop-top cans, beans etc. Items that require significant preparation are less utilized. Donations can be left in the bin across from Fellowship Hall.

Neighbor-to-Neighbor
Neighbor-to-Neighbor is our Deacon's sponsored program to support our congregation members with meals or rides as needed. We currently have a larger number of folks willing to provide meals but would appreciate a few more volunteers to provide rides to occasional medical appointments. If you are able to help, please contact Rocky Meredith at 206.310.6399 or rocmer@comcast.net.

Prayer + Care
Please be in prayer for the following individuals: Garry Arnold, George Dewey, Hannah Tran, Waldher family, Kathryn Heley, Kathleen Tade, Robin Gabbert, Routh Family (Randy's mom), Loretta Edwards (for her daughter), Travis Zapalac (home and responding well to treatment), Bunnie Jorgensen (recent cancer diagnosis). Please contact the church office at 206-364-2712 or your pastors if you have prayer requests.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is now meeting monthly. If you would like to be part of this ministry and knit or crochet or if you know of someone going through a hard time that would enjoy receiving a Prayer Shawl, contact Anne Gowing at 206-910-8505.
