Kia ora Kāpiti
This week we welcome our new Council Chief Executive, and newly elected representatives to our Council whānau. Kia ora (thank you) to everyone who took the time to vote. Final election results will be confirmed on Thursday, and our new councillors and community board members will settle into their new governance roles from Friday – read on to find out more.
We also have updates on how you can track your building consents, and the Mahara Gallery upgrade. And as promised last week, our Annual Report 2021/22 is now available on our website. Grab a cuppa, and have a read!
Mā te wā – have a great week.

Preliminary results of our local election are in
Preliminary results are in! Janet Holborow has been provisionally elected Mayor of the Kāpiti Coast District for the 2022–25 triennium.
The preliminary results show a voter turnout of 19,417, which represents 45.1 per cent of eligible voters. This up from total voter turnout (including special votes) of 18,343 in 2019.
Two candidates have been provisionally elected as councillors and to positions on community boards. Candidates are appointed to the highest position elected, with councillor roles taking precedence over community board positions. The next highest polling candidates for the respective community boards will be appointed when final results are confirmed on Thursday.
Note these results are subject to special votes being counted, so may still change.

Nau mai, haere mai Darren Edwards
|
|
This week we welcome our new Chief Executive, Darren Edwards, to our Council whānau.
|
|
Darren joins us from Far North District Council, and is no stranger to local government.
Over the next few weeks, Darren will get to know our people and community, and support our newly elected Council and community boards in coming up to speed with their governance roles.

Building consent process simplified
|
|
We’ve upgraded our online building consents portal to make it easier for our customers to lodge and track the progress of their consent.
|
|
Customers now have full visibility throughout the process of how their application is tracking from the moment they submit their very first piece of information through to the code of compliance certificate issued at the end.
All documentation required to complete the application process is available on the portal, and we can notify you through the system if we require further information. You can also message us back, upload and download documents, and make payments. This improvement is part of our ongoing commitment to making what can be a complex regulatory environment easier.

Welcome to our new citizens!
Nau mai, haere mai to all Kāpiti's new New Zealanders, who joined us for our first in-person citizenship ceremony in two years last Wednesday.
This celebration will be one to remember for new citizens like Samantha and Michael (pictured) – congratulations and welcome!
The ceremony was also Mayor K Gurunathan's last official engagement as Mayor of Kāpiti Coast District Council, and he was joined by his wife Claire for the occasion.

Whaitua Kāpiti – what does fresh water mean to you?
|
|
The Wellington Region has five ‘whaitua’ – a te Reo Māori word meaning space, or catchment. In a whaitua, all the water is connected from the mountains to the sea.
|
|
Greater Wellington Regional Council is currently turning its attention to Kāpiti, to protect freshwater and restore healthy waterbodies for future generations. Before they write any plans or policies, they’re keen to hear your thoughts on freshwater.
Using your aspirations and ideas, a team of community members, mana whenua, Greater Wellington and Council representatives known as the Whaitua Kāpiti Committee will make recommendations on how to restore Kāpiti's fresh water.
This group will be established over the next few months, and will make recommendations to Greater Wellington on the vision, values and major issues facing fresh water in Kāpiti.

Jogger-naut November for athletes
November is shaping up to be a jogger-naut month for athletes.
The Kāpiti Half Marathon Oma Te Takutai takes place on Sunday 13 November. You’ll wind your way through river trails, lake loops and boardwalks with your choice of a 21-kilometre, 10-kilometre, 5-kilometre or 2-kilometre run. All courses are suitable for buggies, walkers and wheelchair athletes. We're proud sponsors of the Kāpiti Half Marathon through our Major Events Fund.
Then on Sunday 27 November we're delighted to bring the popular Ōtaki Triathlon back to Haruātai Park after an eight-year hiatus! Now called the ŌT or Tauwhāinga-Toru 2022, this is a sprint-distance triathlon across spectacular open spaces, native bush and Ōtaki beachfront. It’s a great opportunity to build your fitness while having a blast, and for experienced triathletes, it's an awesome way to gently kickstart your 2022/23 season with some of the best terrain and views the Kāpiti Coast has to offer.

New wall panels installed at Mahara Gallery
External concrete wall panels have been successfully installed as part of the upgrade to Mahara Gallery.
A large crane lifted the four fibreglass-reinforced concrete panels, weighing between 1.2 and to 1.5 tonnes, into position. The fibreglass/concrete compound is lighter than precast concrete, and provides flexibility to create a shaped and textured design.
Weather conditions were favourable and the operation went smoothly.
The upgrade of our District Gallery will double the number of exhibition galleries and almost treble the exhibition space.
