F1 in Austin: Here are the best ways to get to COTA this weekend

The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix returns to The Circuit of the Americas this weekend, Oct. 21-23, featuring racing action and live musical performances from artists including Green Day and Ed Sheeran.

All vehicles parking on-site at COTA require a pre-purchased parking pass. To avoid the hassle of parking, the shuttles to COTA are the easiest way to get to the track. Shuttles pick up and drop off from three locations:
  • Waterloo Park (Downtown)
  • Barton Creek Square Mall (Southwest Austin)
  • Travis County Exposition Center (Northeast Austin)
You can find information about purchasing shuttle tickets at COTA’s website. If you plan to take a rideshare service to the track this weekend, be aware that the services will operate out of the Del Valle High School parking lot. From there, riders can take a free shuttle to the track.

A record 400,000 fans attended race weekend in 2021 as Max Verstappen earned his first victory in the U.S. Hundreds of thousands are again expected to attend this year throughout the weekend, which culminates with the Grand Prix race on Sunday.

Safety and mobility improvements coming to South Austin intersections

A pair of projects will start before the end of this year that aim to make intersections along South Congress Avenue safer and easier to move through for everyone using the roads.

First up is a project at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Alpine Road East to add a new traffic signal, bike and pedestrian safety improvements and additional signage. The project is scheduled to begin in November and construction is expected to last about a month, barring weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances.

Another safety and mobility project at South Congress Avenue and Ramble Lane is set to begin in December with construction lasting approximately four months. Improvements include:

  • A new traffic signal with three new high-visibility crosswalks
  • New shared-use paths on both sides of South Congress Avenue to make the intersection easier to navigate for people riding bikes
  • A new sidewalk on the south side of Ramble Lane
  • New Americans with Disabilities ACT (ADA)-accessible curb ramps on all four corners
  • A new CapMetro bus stop for northbound buses
  • A new northbound left turn lane on the east side of South Congress Avenue
  • A new raised median along South Congress Avenue south of Ramble Lane

Austin Transportation is leading the projects in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation. Funding comes from the 2018 Mobility Bond and TxDOT’s Highway Safety Improvement Program. For more information on these and other transportation safety projects, visit the City's website.

Last chance to comment on substandard streets in Southeast Austin

This summer and fall, Southeast Austin community members have been weighing in on changes they would like to see to two streets that need improvements.

The City has classified Bradshaw Road and Nuckols Crossing Road as substandard streets, meaning they do not serve the community as they should because they have pavement widths less than 24 feet or lack curb and gutter, drainage, bicycle and sidewalk infrastructure.

Austin is putting together a plan to improve these streets now with help from the community. A public meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 27 from 5-7 p.m. at Austin Public Library’s Southeast Branch, 5803 Nuckols Crossing Road.

This will be the final community meeting before City staff compile and analyze feedback on these two projects. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can find information on the projects at the Bradshaw Road and Nuckols Crossing Road websites.

The City wants to hear from residents and business owners who have thoughts on potential improvements to these two roads—you can email MobilityBonds@austintexas.gov with feedback.
