Salinity levels impact subsoil on Goyder's Line farms

Wrapping up this month is the Goyder’s Line project, a busy, one-year Australian Government-funded project which helped our region’s most vulnerable farmers adapt to changing climatic conditions.

As part of the project, Northern and Yorke  Landscape Board worked with 12 landholders in the vicinity of Goyder’s Line to take soil samples.

Landscape Project Officer Libby Duncan and PIRSA Principal Consultant Brian Hughes used a hydraulic soil corer to investigate the soil profile between 10cm and 40cm. They found that reduced ground cover and limited harvest opportunities had caused inherent salinity levels to rise and impact the critical 20-40cm subsoil where crop roots grow in some situations. Deep testing also provided information on availability of major nutrients such as nitrogen and sulphur down the profile and other subsoil issues such as toxic boron.

It showed the farmers involved how important soil testing is to pinpoint corrective treatments. As Libby said, “With fertiliser prices and transport costs at all-time highs, critically looking at what soil nutrients are needed before ordering has saved landholders considerable money this season”. A new DGT Phosphorus test which measures plant available P was demonstrated with participants and highlighted some paddocks have very high P levels with surplus supply for multiple crops while others are still responding significantly.

The Goyder’s Line project was supported by the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board, through funding from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

Did you know the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board has a  full-time soil officer? Geoff Kew brings decades of soil experience to our team to help primary producers navigate soil health and improve productivity. Call us on 8841 3444.

Small Business Financial Counselling

Rural Business Support's (RBS) team of Business Financial Counsellors are available to support eligible small business owners who are in financial distress.

What is the RBS Small Business Financial Counselling Program?

The Small Business Financial Counselling (SBFC) program provides FREE practical support to eligible small business owners in rural and regional areas who are currently in financial distress due to the ongoing impact of COVID, drought or recent bushfires.

Why should I work with a Business Financial Counsellor?

Business Financial Counsellors are skilled at identifying opportunities and threats to businesses. But more importantly, they can help you to proactively map a way forward by helping you to develop a strategy to help ease some of your financial pressures.

Your team at RBS will support you to:
•    Identify how COVID restrictions are impacting your cash flow and what financial support might be available to alleviate some of your financial distress
•    Develop plans to manage your cash flow and creditor payments moving forwards
•    Prepare for talks with lenders, major service providers and insurance companies
•    Access dispute resolution services
•    Connect with broader professional advice and support
•    Identify opportunities for you to apply for government and community grants, programs or schemes

Is my business eligible to access the SBFC program?

To be eligible to receive financial counselling, a small business must:
•    Have 19 employees or less
•    Be experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship due to COVID, drought or bushfire
•    Be located in an area classified as rural (i.e. outside of the greater Adelaide metropolitan area)
•    Our services are free, confidential and independent.

Our Business Financial Counsellors live and work in rural and regional communities, so they understand well the challenges that local business owners are facing.

If you are a small business owner in financial distress, or you work with small business owners who could benefit from a chat with one of our Business Financial Counsellors, please refer them to RBS on FREECALL 1800 836 211.

The data answers key questions about:

•    What new occupations are emerging across Australia?
•    What have people been studying?
•    How many people were working from home?
•    How did people travel to work?
