“Dream of Kabakov” by Ilya & Emilia Kabakov @Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial
I visited the 8th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (open through Nov 13th.) Within a weekend, you can only view a fraction of the huge exhibition held in the 760 square kilometer area but I was moved by "Kabakov's Dream," a group of works by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, organized at and around the Matsudai "Nohbutai". Despite the fact that Kabakovs were not given a chance to present their works until they were in their 50s during the Soviet era, they kept on daydreams freely to develop their fantasy. Each of the works, such as "Encounter with an Angel," "Trust of Others," and "Cloud Management," was accompanied by instructions on how to create the work, which showed their strong will to continue daydreaming even if they are not allowed to express them in form. In addition to the representative work, "The Rice Fields," a "The Monument of Tolerance," proposed by the couple from Ukraine with a wish for peace, was completed for this year's Art Triennial.
