Nordic Energy Challenge: Winner of 2022

The first, second, and third place in the Nordic Energy Challenge 2022 have been elected by this year's jury, and awarded at the conference The green future of maritime operations in Nuuk on 4–5 October.

We are proud to present and wish to congratulate Qianwen Xu! She received first prize for her idea "Renewable energy-hydrogen based microgrid for sustainable Arctic communities".

Conference: Joint Baltic-Nordic Energy Research Programme

On 24–25 October, the Joint Baltic-Nordic Energy Research Programme arranges a conference in Riga, Latvia. The conference aims to strengthen research collaboration, and the programme involves more than 100 scientists. One of these scientists is Anna Volkova, Professor and head of smart district heating research group at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech). 

"The programme results are amazing, and it goes without saying that the conference in Riga is a fantastic networking opportunity for researchers from the Baltic and Nordic countries," says Anna.

Webinar: Fire safety issues for biofuel in heating plants

On 2 November at 12:00–13:00The Nordic Fire and Safety Network focusing on Energy (NFSNergy) invites all to a webinar with focus on fire safety and biofuel in heating plants. Registered attendees will receive a Zoom-link to access the webinar – sign up and read more here

Event: Ocean Energy – A Vital Future Source

On 14 October at 15:05–16:00, Nordic Energy Research organizes the event Ocean Energy: A Vital Future Source at the 2022 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland, in partnership with NORA Nordic Atlantic Cooperation, the Government of the Faroe Islands, and the Faroese Environment Agency.

Klaus Skytte, CEO of Nordic Energy Research, will join the event together with keynote speaker Marte Rusten, Principal Consultant Sustainability at DNV. Marte supports the Nordic Council of Ministers' efforts within co-existence and nature inclusive design in wind energy development, and she authored the 2022 report on Accommodating Biodiversity in Nordic Offshore Wind Projects.

Interview: Sofia Elamson – not only an ex-colleague, but also friend

Senior Adviser Sofia Elamson had her last day at Nordic Energy Research on 9 September. During her five years at the office, Sofia has been a brilliant contribution personally as well as professionally and will be missed by all.

"I am lucky to have been working with such great people of whom so many are not only ex-colleagues but also friends. Thank you for these years and keep up the good spirits!" says Sofia.

Open call: Nordic hydrogen valleys as energy hubs – by 2030 and 2040

The call for proposals for the Joint Nordic Hydrogen Research Programme is open. Hydrogen has become a very attractive option in the quest to reduce CO2-emissions both at EU-level and in the Nordic region. The Nordics have roadmaps and strategies related to hydrogen, and the theme of the research programme is to provide common interest for all Nordic countries and to complement rather than duplicate national R&D programmes. 

The programme is funded by Nordic Energy Research together with Business FinlandIcelandic Research FundInnovation Fund DenmarkNorwegian Research Council, and Swedish Energy Agency.

Call deadline is 31 October at 13:00.
