Talk Money Week aims to reduce the stigma around money by encouraging conversations among families, friends, neighbours, customers, colleagues and communities. Talking about finances has been shown to help people make better informed and less risky financial decisions. It also helps people feel less stressed or anxious and more in control, have stronger personal relationships, and help their children form good lifetime money habits. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and pressures due to the rising cost of living has made it more important than ever to start conversations about money to look after our financial wellbeing.

Throughout the week there will be activity across the UK to get more people talking about personal finance issues, and engaging with topics such as managing credit, saving regularly, planning for retirement, dealing with debt, and teaching children and young people about managing money.

Talk Money Week is an annual public awareness campaign, run by the Money and Pensions Service, to get the nation having conversations about money. It takes place from 7th-11th November 2022

Warm Spaces in B&NES
Many of you will be aware of the new Warm Spaces in Bath & North East Somerset; here’s the news item:
https://newsroom.bathnes.gov.uk/news/next-steps-warm-spaces-bath-and-north-east-somerset-energy-costs-soar.

The Warm Spaces Directory has just gone live (on Live Well B&NES) and organisations and venues in B&NES are being asked to come forward and register as a Warm Space. Once the Directory is more populated, we will be looking to promote it to B&NES residents.
Support for those living in cold homes in B&NES
Impact of cold homes on health and wellbeing
Cold homes can have a big impact on health and wellbeing and on health inequalities. The current energy crisis and subsequent rise in energy costs along with energy inefficient homes can lead to problems with cold and damp/mould which can affect people’s health, particularly the more vulnerable. A home can be hard to heat if the cost of heating to a comfortable and safe temperature is more than the resident can afford.  Some homes are particularly difficult to keep warm in cold weather. These include houses with broken or draughty windows and doors, those dwellings which are poorly insulated and those which rely on more traditional heating methods such as storage heaters.

Cold homes can cause and worsen respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, poor mental health, dementia, hypothermia.  It can also increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if boilers, cooking, and heating appliances are poorly maintained or ventilated.

Energy at Home
The Council’s Energy at Home www.energyathome.org.uk service is an important resource available to B&NES residents.  Energy at home provides information and signposting on making energy saving home improvements including low carbon heating options, insulation, and renewable technologies in addition to information about grant funding available.

Bright Green Homes
Current grants available include the Bright Green Homes grant funding for eligible households to help lower the cost of their energy bills and reduce their C02 emissions

DHI Online Platform

Developing Health and Independence (DHI) offers an online platform for young people who are 18 and under. The platform known as THE WRAP enables young people to get support at an early stage and empowers them to make positive choices, helping them to build resilience and overcome life’s challenges. In Bath and North East Somerset, THE WRAP links into Project28, making it easier for young people to access free and confidential services, providing a space for young people to be open about the problems they are facing. Please promote THE WRAP to your networks.

For young people looking to take charge and find further information and resources to help them make the right decision visit: https://www.thewrapdhi.org.uk/self-help-tool
World Antimicrobial Awareness Week
November 18-24th is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.
Antibiotic resistance remains one of the biggest threats facing us today.
Everyone can play a part!
Why not take the opportunity to learn more about the fascinating science around antibiotics with resources designed by teachers and scientists at e-Bug.  You could also join over 170,000 people and take a pledge to become Antibiotic Guardians. Simple actions can be taken such as finishing a course of antibiotics as prescribed and not sharing them with others, talking to a pharmacist first for coughs, colds, and sore throats before going to a GP and effective hand washing.

Please get in touch if you’d be interested in doing more this Antimicrobial Awareness Week!

B&NES Suicide Prevention Event – 12th October

Thanks to all of those who attended the Annual B&NES Suicide Prevention Stakeholder Event at the Guildhall on Wednesday 12th October. There were over 50 attendees representing the B&NES community, council, and local organisations.
Bath Mind displayed their ‘blanket of compassion’ (see below) created by individuals using Bath Mind’s breathing space service, to recognise the strength and voice of individuals with lived experience.

It was great to see so many people get together to discuss how Suicide Prevention is everybody’s business and what we can all do to embed Suicide Prevention into our everyday work. We were particularly grateful to our speakers who presented at the event this included, expert by experience, Bath Mind, Samaritan’s and the Avon and Somerset Police.
If you would like a copy of the presentations given on the day or would like to discuss the next Suicide Prevention agenda, please contact Suicide_Prevention@Bathnes.gov.uk.

Flu Vaccine
Flu vaccination is important because:
  • Whilst flu is unpleasant for most people, it can be dangerous and even life threatening for some people, particularly those with certain health conditions
  • More people are likely to get flu this winter as fewer people will have built up natural immunity to it during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • If you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time, research shows that you’re more likely to be seriously ill
Flu Vaccine for Adults

Where to get the flu vaccine
You can have the NHS flu vaccine at:

Flu Vaccine for Children
The children’s nasal spray flu vaccine is safe and effective. It is offered every year to children to help protect them against ‘flu.
Flu is caused by the influenza virus. It can be a very unpleasant illness for children. It can also lead to serious problems, such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
Children can catch and spread flu easily. Vaccinating them also protects others who are vulnerable to flu, such as babies and older people.
