World Food Day

Food is not a privilege; it is a basic right. That is the message of World Food Day. Did you know that is a holiday? It is! This United Nations holiday began in 1979. This year, World Food Day will be celebrated across the world on Sunday, October 16. What a great weekend to be in service with one another.

Roswell United Methodist is partnering with Rise Against Hunger, the Giving Garden, Foster Care Support Foundation, and Table on Delk for the annual Great Day of Service tomorrow.

Table on Delk is a human trafficking ministry that feeds women and gives them choices on what to eat while using real silverware and china on hand-decorated placemats. The Giving Garden provides fresh produce directly onto the tables of our neighbors; while children get to walk straight over and eat the tomato or the pepper or the cucamelon straight off the vine!

Foster Care Support Foundation provides free clothes to children, so the household has fewer expenses, providing more food choices. Last year, Rise Against Hunger alone provided over 23 million meals from bags of rice that were measured and sealed by volunteers across the world.

From decorating placemats to measuring bags full of rice, sorting clothes, and spreading mulch, our community will help feed people. In our community, families do not have enough. While we decide which grocery store to shop at, some are deciding what to skip. While we cannot eradicate worldwide hunger in a day, we can work toward it.

Amazing things can happen around a table with food on it! Firsthand from scripture, we believe that Christ is revealed when bread is broken. So, while nutrition is restored, conversations are shared, Christ is at work.

It is not a privilege to serve, it is a sacred right. That is what we celebrate this weekend. Join me in providing all people with more food at the table.

Blessings,
