Workforce Development In Action

Launched this past year, Frederick’s Biotech Bootcamp (BBC) is a no-cost training program designed through the collaborative effort of Frederick Community College, Frederick County Workforce Services, The City of Frederick: Department of Economic Development and Frederick County Office of Economic Development -- to help participants develop basic skills needed for entry-level positions within the biotechnology/biomanufacturing industry. The BBC program offered candidates from industries hard hit by COVID-19, an opportunity to choose a new career path. The program’s focus is developing the much-needed talent pipeline for both our local and regional Bio-industry companies. Delivering real career opportunities & meeting workforce needs, graduates are then matched with participating companies for guaranteed job interviews. To date, two cohorts have successfully completed the program. A few program highlights:

  • With no prior experience, over 75% of participants are working in their new career field,
  • 96% completion rate for Biotech Bootcamp participants,
  • 75% of program completers obtained two or more BCSI micro-credentials.

The next Biotech Boot Camp will be held January 9 - February 3, 2023.  Contact Latrice Lewis at 301-600-2762 with any questions.

"I was extremely fortunate to be chosen as a member of the inaugural class of the Biotech Boot Camp in 2022. In four weeks of hands-on practical experience, I learned the fundamentals of the biotech industry and the technical skills it normally takes years to master. I combined these with my background in administration and project management and landed a lucrative position as a project manager for a major biotech company right here in Frederick.

The biotech industry in the Frederick area is booming. Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to change your career and change your life. I did. You can too! "

Success Story: An Apprenticeship as a Solution

During the midst of a labor shortage, 25-year-old company turns to Registered Apprenticeship Program for talent pipeline and access to candidates.

It is exciting when your business is ready grow. There is a sense of achievement that your product and/or service is becoming proven. Then comes the fun part, hiring more employees to help manage all this success. There’s one catch...there is a labor shortage. Traditionally, you would put out an ad, interview some candidates, and voila! you're expanding. However, the currently labor shortage is making employers to become more innovative and invested in their hiring and pipeline development.

One of the age-old, yet proven, pipeline development tool is building an apprenticeship program. One of our very own, 25-year-old tried and true, Frederick County employers, Summit Anchor Company, recently found themselves at an impasse struggling to grow their workforce. Heeding the advice and guidance of Frederick County Workforce Services, they started their journey of becoming a Maryland Registered Apprenticeship. As of this September, Summit Anchor Company is able to say, successfully, they have a registered Iron Working Apprenticeship Program.

Employees enter this program as a full-time employee, with benefits, and progress in their career over the next four years. On-the-job training and in-the-class related instruction are all part of the apprenticeship program. Employees get a wage increase with each year completed, and they also receive nationally recognized industry credentials. All this is part of the curriculum developed by the team at Summit Anchor Company with the assistance Apprenticeship Navigators at the Maryland Department of Labor Apprenticeship.

Hats off to Summit Anchor Company for making the commitment and investment to their workforce, their company, and their continued growth. For more information about their apprenticeship program.
