DTP Student's PhD finding published

Wales DTP student Melissa Martin (Science & Technology Studies, Cardiff University) recently had an article published in the Sociological Review Magazine.  Melissa's doctoral project examines the social implications surrounding the diagnosis and classification of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder.  Melissa's recently published article reviews the use of the Beighton Score as a tool to assess joint mobility. Read about Melissa's findings on the Sociological Review Magazine's website.

UKRI Policy Internships

The UKRI Policy Internships Scheme provides the opportunity for doctoral students funded by the Research Councils of UKRI to undertake a three-month placement at one of a selected group of highly influential policy organisations. During their internship, the student undertakes training and experience on a policy topic agreed with their host partner that is relevant to both parties.  The intention of the scheme is to embed students in an environment where they can engage with the process of converting research outputs into policy.  These internships equip students with transferable skills and training relevant to the future career paths that the student may choose.

These internships are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship).  Full details of how to apply, including links to the online application form and guidance documents are available through the UKRI website.  The deadline for applications is 4pm on 4 November.  Contact the Wales DTP no later than 28 October to discuss your application.

Collaborative Studentships

In September, the Wales DTP held a collaborative studentships information session for supervisors.  A range of organisations in the public, private and third sector work with the Wales DTP, offering in-kind or financial support (and sometimes both) to research training, in an arrangement that is designed to be mutually beneficial.  The session included talks from external partners Health and Care Research Wales and the London Fire Brigade on the benefits of working with the DTP, and a supervisor and researcher on their own experience of collaborative research. The recorded talks are now available to view on the Wales DTP website.

Internship Opportunities: Welsh Government

The Wales DTP is pleased to offer eight internship opportunities (of 3-6 months' duration) with the Welsh Government, on projects on a range of topics including children's experience of family courts, research into demand for and supply of immigration advice services in Wales, and analysis of trade data.  These internships are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship).  It is anticipated that the internships will commence in January 2023.  Successful applicants will continue to receive their stipend during their internship, and will get an extension to their PhD equivalent to the duration of their internship.

Full internship project descriptions and an application form can be found on the Wales DTP website.  Applications should be submitted to the Wales DTP by the applications deadline of 4pm on 31 October.

Student Rep Vacancies

The Wales DTP is seeking enthusiastic students to take up the role of DTP Student Rep at Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff University (two Reps are being sought), Swansea University and the University of Gloucestershire.  Student Reps act as a conduit for comments and ideas from fellow Wales DTP funded students across the academic schools and pathways within their institution, relaying feedback to the DTP about all aspects of the student experience. If you are interested in becoming a Wales DTP Student Rep, send your nomination to the Wales DTP along with the names of two fellow Wales DTP students who support your nomination, by 21 October.  Further details about the role of Student Rep are available on the Wales DTP website.

Is Your Research Profile Up-to-Date?

The Wales DTP website features profiles of our students, providing a valuable opportunity for fellow students, academics and sponsors to explore the research that is being undertaken and discover opportunities for collaboration.  In October, we will be inviting the new cohort of DTP students to provide us with their profiles. In the meantime, if aspects of your research interests have altered, please remember to update your online profile.
