Hi everyone,

Here is some of the latest news from Hoxton Health.  We’re aiming  to get these newsletters out to you regularly, so if you’re involved in any activities that you would like to let Hoxton Health patients know about, please let us know and we can include them next time.

Firstly, we wanted to highlight to you - for yourselves, or for your friends and neighbours - this brochure from the Council listing all kinds of cost of living help.  This can be downloaded here - or you can read it via this weblink.  It lists a wide range of help - including government and council schemes, lunch clubs and vouchers-  that is available to help get us all through the winter months with the challenges of general inflation and fuel cost rises.

Hoxton Health attended the excellent Ageing Well event at Walrond House Community Hub run by Hackney Housing's Resident Participation Team - we brought massage sessions and our Slow Zumba classes - all featured further down this email!!  The event gave older people access to a range of help available, as well letting people know about our sister organisations - The Sharp End for low-cost exercise classes and MRS Independent Living for stay steady exercise, and home safety checks.  If you missed this event, look out for the Council's Winter Warmer event  on Tuesday 1st November at Hackney Church (St John at Hackney), Lower Clapton Rd, E5 0PD from 11am-3pm.

At Hoxton Health we welcome Ruth, our new part-time finance worker, to the team.  And we welcome Sam and Tonia who join our fabulous admin and reception volunteer team of Angela, Juliet, Sandra, Kathryn and Clare, who as you know, are the heartbeat of the organisation.  Great thanks to all of them - and to you, for using and appreciating Hoxton Health.

Have a great week,

Ann

New Osteopathy service

We were sorry to say goodbye to Joe Dale, our osteopath who left us over the summer.  Joe is heading off to do physiotherapy training to add to his CV, and has promised to come back once he has qualified.  In the meantime we have two new osteopaths starting work, due to the level of demand.  So if you have been waiting for an osteopath appointment, please give us a call and we should be able to offer you an appointment now.

Pop-up Nutrition, Homeopathy and Naturopathy clinic

We are setting up a pop-up clinic for Nutrition, Homeopathy and Naturopathy - sound interesting?  Get in touch and we can tell you more about it, and how to book.

Update on nail-cutting

Hoxton Health nail-cutting service, subsidised by the local NHS, was one of our most popular services.  With the NHS changes, unfortunately our City and Hackney-wide contract came to an end.  Some GP practices (in Shoreditch and City, and Hackney Downs) have joined together to offer free treatments, with Hoxton Health practitioners working in their surgeries.  At present for everyone else, the only thing we have to offer is our full cost treatment at Hoxton Health, which is £30.  This is a changing situation, and we will keep you updated.

Come along to Hoxton Gardens on October 21st for "The People Speak"!

Welcome to Talkaoke – an interactive pop-up talkshow, where you, the participants, set the agenda. Join us at Hoxton Garden  and let’s chat about all things local and global.

The People Speak is an art group based in East London, with 25 year expertise in getting people to understand each other. We use performance art and multi-media to create fun and interactive environments, pushing the boundaries of what a conversation can lead to. We also train people in creative facilitation skills and event production.

Help us to help you!

We continue to fundraise to keep the treatments as low-cost as possible, and we will have to put the prices up in the coming months because we need to raise the fees we pay our therapists.  We will try to keep this to a minimum, here are some ways you can help us with this.

1.     Tell your friends and family about Hoxton Health – more bookings helps us!

2.     If you are having a massage, bring your own towel

3.     Use a card to pay if you can – our bank is charging us to bank cash!

4.     Make a donation with your payment, or put some cash in the donation box

5.     Tell your GP and other NHS professionals about Hoxton Health treatments!

6.     Search the web and shop online with Everyclick – if you can list Hoxton Health as your charity as choice, it costs you nothing and helps us!

Got a story of how Hoxton Health has helped you?

Our funders love to hear personal stories about how their funding support has helped people - whether recovering from an operation, increasing mobility, managing pain and stress - or whatever it might be.  Do you have a couple of lines you could send us?  Or a story of how Hoxton Health has helped you?  We need to be able to make the case for funders to continue to support Hoxton Health, if you are able to let us know about this - it can really help.  Thank you!

Focus on....Mezieres Method and Postural Re-education at Hoxton Health - with Emma Diani

We are often asked about the benefits of the Postural Re-education and the Mezieres Method treatments at Hoxton Health, so we thought we would do a quick update here.  The Mezieres method was first created by French physiotherapist Francoise Mezieres French.  It is based on the principles that Mezieres observed, that in the human body the muscles form functional units called muscle chains linking together to form structures - like the postural chain that runs from the top of the head to the toes.  The method was a further developed by Dr Bertele, a student and collaborator of Mezieres, as well as being a psychologist, physical therapist and moto-rehabilitation specialist. The Mezieres method of Postural Re-education has become highly sophisticated method of diagnosis treatment and prevention

Emma Diani, who offers these treatments at Hoxton Health, is a multi-qualified therapist with 25 years experience. Emma trained in Italy at physio - massage school, where she met Laura Bertele, a doctor who was the first student, and then collaborator, of Francoise Mezieres, and this made Emma decide to study the Mezieres Method herself.  Emma now specialises in what has become the world-renowned Mezieres/Bertele postural re- education method.

What will happen in a treatment session?  First the practitioner will always carry out a general and thorough postural examination, where postural and muscular problems are highlighted. Massage and manual manipulation techniques are then used, aiming  to re-balance the muscles, concentrating on lengthening of the most contracted muscles and to restore the postural chain to a harmonious balance.

This method is suitable for people who want to improve and to balance their posture, for all physical problems like a scoliosis, kiphosis, back pain, stiff neck and limited mobility - as well as being a holistic treatment for physical and emotional wellbeing, and for the prevention of injury and falls.

Emma is also qualified in the medical Lympho-drainage Vodder method for treating circulation and swelling problems post cancer and post surgery. Her wide ranging

experience also includes different kinds of massage, including deep tissue, Swedish, sport and aromatherapy.
