Hello! This week's edition comes from URL's Head of Recruitment, Leonor Ayala Polley!
More than a decade ago, I started my first role in management. While I was excited my impostor syndrome quickly kicked into high gear, shaking my confidence. Thankfully, I had the support of a seasoned, thoughtful, and intentional human resources partner who gave me a few critical pieces of advice. The framework he shared with me consisted of the following:
It was the cornerstone of my first 90 days as a new people leader, leading a team that had never had direct oversight. I was in a completely unfamiliar newsroom culture, and I leaned on my HR partner a lot. This was my first experience having a semblance of a 90-day plan for myself — though we didn’t call it that at the time, it was an integral part of my success as a new manager.
As a people leader, it is important to have a plan for yourself and for your team, especially for new hires or people who have moved into new roles. It is as critical to your success as theirs. But how do you integrate new hires or the newly promoted into your team? How do you ensure they understand the expectations of the job and feel supported?
I am excited to moderate a conversation with Erin Grau, co-founder, and chief operating officer of Charter, and Priska Neely, managing editor of the Gulf States Newsroom, on Friday, October 14th to help answer all these questions and more. (This piece from Priska on how she manages the first 90 days is a great pre-read.) We are going to share our own missteps and tried-and-true practices that will set everyone up for success.
Join us for a free off-the-record-webinar tailored to hiring managers and people leaders. Register here and bring your questions!
And mark your calendars, because once a month for the rest of the year, we'll offer training for new employees and hiring managers on how to make the most of an employee's — you guessed it — first 90 days in a new job.
The First 90 Days: Understanding Disability in the Workplace, November 18, 4 pm ET
Those who are disabled — particularly those of us who are disabled people of color — understand that navigating a new job can be incredibly daunting. This webinar will help managers and employees understand how to navigate conversations about accommodations and expectations early.
The First 90 Days: Parents & Caregivers, Dec. 9, 4 pm ET
In September, you read a great conversation about the challenges and triumphs of being a parenting journalist. This webinar will help parents, and caregivers figure out what they need and how to ask for it and will help managers understand how to provide the environment employees need to thrive at work and care for their families.
