INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE TUNNEL
TURNPIKE ASSOCIATION
2022 Conference Recap
Last month the Mobility Authority co-hosted the International Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association’s (IBTTA) 2022 annual conference here in Austin. Each year, transportation agencies across the world come together to exchange ideas and share new innovations and best practices to address the critical infrastructure challenges of the 21st Century.
This was one of the first in-person meetings since 2019 due to COVID-19. As a result, resiliency was an overarching theme throughout the conference – the importance of finding opportunities to meet community needs and our customers’ expectations despite the challenges.
A big congratulations to our leadership and staff who helped make this year’s conference a success. Your expertise and dedication to innovative transportation solutions is what allows the Mobility Authority to remain an industry leader.

The Mobility Authority and IBTTA
Several members of our staff presented at the conference. To name a few, Fabiola Bowers, our Traffic and Incident Manager, and Greg Mack, our Director of Information Technology, both spoke on panels regarding safety and our Chief of Staff, DeeAnne Vickery spoke on an environmental panel.
Fabiola discussed the faster, more efficient responses provided to the traveling public as a result of the Mobility Authority’s Traffic and Incident Management (TIM) Center. This intelligent transportation system utilizes traffic cameras, sensors, and other technologies along our facilities, aiding coordination of resources to address accidents and other interruptions to traffic flow. (Did you know you can get the latest traffic updates by following the TIM Center on Twitter? Take a look!)
Greg presented on some of the key safety infrastructure employed on Mobility Authority roadways, including our advanced wrong-way driver detection system that the agency piloted on the 45SW Toll Road. This innovative technology deploys countermeasures to notify drivers and first responders of potential wrong-way driving incidents.
DeeAnne emphasized the importance of engaging local community and environmental groups throughout all stages of a project and highlighted the efforts taken by the Mobility Authority to build projects which address both our region’s infrastructure needs and preservation of the environment.

BIKE NIGHT AT COTA
Track Stars
Lately, it’s been bikes, not race cars, cruising the Circuit of America’s (COTA) track. The Mobility Authority sponsored COTA’s Bike Night every Tuesday in September, talking with cyclists, answering questions, and giving away gear including water bottles and bike lights.

It may seem unusual for the Mobility Authority to sponsor a bike event – but we’re not just a toll road operator. Our mobility projects are designed to meet the needs of all users. We include bike and pedestrian enhancements on all our projects where feasible, expanding the region’s network of trails, shared use paths, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
To date, we have more than 70 miles of shared use paths planned or in place. The recently opened 183 Toll Road, in particular, includes new pedestrian bridges, bike lanes, and a 10-foot-wide shared use path along the 8-mile corridor. This $25 million investment in bicycle and pedestrian facilities ensures safe and accessible routes for all who use the new roadway - not just those in vehicles.
Visit our website to learn more about the Mobility Authority’s bike and pedestrian network.

City of Austin: Choosing Our Path
Have you heard about ATX Walk Bike Roll? The City of Austin is asking for the public’s help to guide its plan for future sidewalks, bikeways and urban trails. Their ATX Walk Bike Roll Choosing Our Path virtual open house allows for people to:
- View three scenarios for future bike and pedestrian connections, as well as related programs and policies.
- Find information on key topics including Transportation Policy and Shared Streets concepts.
- Give feedback on the types of connections and where pedestrian crossing locations should be prioritized.
Your input will help shape major decisions about the future of Austin's pedestrian and bicycle routes. Click here to give feedback by October 23!
