This week, the Department of Art History welcomes Theresa Avila! Dr. Avila will present on current efforts that engage data and technology in the development of Digital Art History projects.
Beginning in 2016 with the project Mapping History Project: Stories of the Southwest that tells the story of Mexican descent communities of Arizona, Dr. Avila has been exploring and training toward the development of skills and abilities for Digital Art History projects. Today, she is working on a databases and a website that document and visualize the social and political factors relevant to the representations of national parks and diverse communities. Learn more »

The SAAH Racial Justice Task Force (RJTF) is an ad hoc group of SAAH students, faculty, and staff working together to promote a culture of racial justice in our school. All are welcome to attend our meetings and participate in RJTF activities and projects.
Fall '22 activities include:
* Creating an emergency fund to support students in SAAH.
* Ongoing advocacy for part time and contract BIPOC faculty.
* Planning a creative intervention in support of renaming CADA campus buildings!

Join the UIC Latino Cultural Center for a series of online conversations with environmental and climate justice leaders from across the country this fall. Their work reveals frameworks and strategies to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change and environmental pollution on communities of color, indigenous, and low-income earners. Students in the Environmental & Climate Justice course* will facilitate the conversations. Co-sponsored in part by the Museum & Exhibition Studies program.
Claudia Navarro is the Co-Executive Director at WeCount!, a South Dade based worker’s center. She will talk about how her work uplifts the working conditions of domestic workers, day laborers, and agriculture workers in South Florida. Learn more »

Circle Associate Professor Nina Dubin's co-curated exhibition Fortune and Folly in 1720 opened at the New York Public Library last month!
"Offering tragicomic depictions of malevolent traders, hoodwinked investors, and villainous seductresses, the prints hold up a mirror to our own age, with its ever more complex monetary instruments and periodic meltdowns. They also reflect on the intersections between art and finance, reminding us that both are products of human imaginings." Learn more »

For Each Other highlights the ways a group of Chicago-based artists and collectives consider care in their work and in the contexts they create for their work. In the included artworks and projects, care is an active, participatory process.
UIC alumni Jon Aldrich (BFA '19), Edith Mendez (BFAAE '20), Jessa Mendiola (BFA '19), Nydia Mendiola (BFA '19), Angelica Mendoza (BFAAE '21), and Eric Perez (BFA '19), as the collective Real Fake Artists, Inc., have recreated for the exhibition their fall 2019 course final project, a proposal—in cardboard sculpture form—for a student lounge in Art & Exhibition Hall.
Latham Zearfoss (MFA '11) created a new meditative video installation for the exhibition. Liz McCarthy (MFA '17) in a partnership with the ceramic studio she founded, GnarWare Workshop, and artist Lan Tuazon, is running the Third Empty Bowls Fundraiser in the exhibition. Hand-thrown ceramic bowls are for sale in the show; all sales provide direct support to the Pilsen Food Pantry, Nita’s Love Train, and McKinley Park Mutual Aid.
Other artists and collectives include Kennedy Healy and Marley Molkentin, Public Media Institute (of which alumnus Nick Wylie, MFA '10), The Love Fridge Chicago (of which Eric Von Haynes, adjunct faculty in the School of Design is a part), and the UIC Disability Cultural Center Community Care Cohort. 2023 Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition at MSI Chicago
The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) is now accepting applications for its 2023 Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition.
For more than 50 years, MSI has hosted the nation’s premier exhibition of African American art. This annual show presents more than 100 works of art from professional and emerging Black artists from across the United States. Applications are being accepted until October 16.
