Happy October Be-Held Woman!
This season we focus on putting Christ back in wellness. For 10 months we will explore what it means to be well from a Christ-centered and biblical perspective. Get ready to learn about God's design for our spiritual, emotional, physical, intellectual, social, vocational, and financial wellness. For October, we will focus on spiritual wellness.
We are spiritually well when we have a clear sense of our God-given purpose and a biblically rooted conviction about our personal significance to God and the world. Being spiritually well is founded on right relationship with God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, and an ability to hear and respond to the voice of God. That's why we kickstart our focus on biblical literacy with an invitation to READ Scripture through the lens of Jesus' character.
What does it mean to read through the lens of Jesus' character? It means to consider, as you read all of Scripture, how Jesus Christ would have read it given who He is. In other words, this is about hearing the voice of God read the Word of God.
Firstly, this approach to reading Scripture encourages us to ask the following questions as we read:
- What is God like?
- Given God's character, what would His attitude towards His audience (initial and present-day) be?
- Given God's character, what would His attitude towards the topic be?
- Given God's character, what would His hope be in communicating this message to His audience (initial and present-day)?
Secondly, when we read silently, we often hear an internal voice. A way to surface AND align our perceptions of God's attitude towards the initial audience, ourselves, and the topic is to READ Scripture aloud. This we should do after considering the questions above.
Listen to Graham Cooke's explanation, in the video below, of the significance of this approach to begin forming your own understanding of why this practice is important in your day-to-day life.
PRACTICE with this month's focus Scripture, John 10: 27 - 28.
