Thanksgiving Gratitude

Cicero called it “the greatest of virtues,” “the parent of all others.”  Seneca said the lack of it was “an abomination.”  It's “gratitude,” close kin of gracious and grateful.
Yet we live in a society filled with self-made men and women who tend to think that what they have is what they deserved.  We live in a culture where gratitude is often in short supply.
A person was asked why she enjoyed working in development at a university.  She replied, “Because I get to work with such really good people.  Stingy people are bad people.  Generous people tend to be good people.  I like working with good people.”
Her testimonial to the joy of working with beneficent individuals is borne out by research.  Research studies by psychologists show that grateful people seem to have a highly developed sense of reciprocal social attitudes including trust, straightforwardness, altruism, modesty, and tender-heartedness.
A 1996 study of university women noted that the women who, in an assessment taken 17 years earlier, acknowledged a high number of mentors who had been helpful in their development, were more likely, years later, to be caring and giving toward others in mid life.  Gratitude for gifts received is a motivator for gifts given.
And a 1998 survey by George Gallup found that 78% of teenagers and 89% of adults expressed gratitude to God “all the time” or “some of the time.”  In a study of priests and nuns in 1985 researchers found that gratitude was the second most frequently expressed emotion toward God, second only to love.  Clearly, gratitude is at the heart of much religious practice.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,

Antler River Watershed Regional Meeting.  If you’ve ever wondered about the “higher levels” of the United Church, how it works, what it does, and its impact on discipleship and the world, or desired to leave your imprint on the larger church – then you may be interested in representing Camlachie Church at our regional fall meeting.  It will be held online on Friday October 28th and Saturday the 29th.  (FYI: “Antler River” is the historic Anishinaabe name for the Thames River.  “The Antler River Watershed Regional Council” is the new United Church name for the older region known as “London Conference.”  It includes Elgin, Essex, Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, Oxford, and five Indigenous Churches.)  For further information contact Secretary Heather or Reverend Dave.
