Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a school governance conference with some of our board members as well as those from some of our sister schools. While there was great teaching and learning throughout the conference, the best part was building relationships. I had the opportunity to spend focused time with some people I haven’t seen in a few years as well as with those I see more frequently, but in a casual setting. The nature of this conference gave us amazing opportunities to connect.

During the mid-semester break, I will be traveling to the U.S. to visit our former Head of School, Karl Steinkamp, and his wife, Jacki. This decision was made with the specific purpose of supporting and encouraging them in this difficult season they are going through. I’m also looking forward to experiencing a real autumn season and spending some time with dear friends. If you think of it, please be prayerful that I will be a blessing to them.

As I’ve been thinking about these experiences, I’ve realized a few things. First of all, reconnecting with people is a lot of work! It takes time and focus. It takes vulnerability and listening. It is often inconvenient but never wasted. I’ve also come to understand that, even when given a great opportunity, we must be intentional in reconnecting. This requires us to give of ourselves in order to meet others where they are.

As we take time away from school next week, I want to encourage you to be intentional about reconnecting with your children. During the COVID lockdowns, you probably had a lot more time with your kids than you do now. Please find ways to make the time next week meaningful. Invest in building relationships with people, including your immediate family. Consider time as something to be invested, not merely spent.

Bangkok International Choral Festival 2022
2022 방콕 국제 합창 페스티벌 ・ 2022年曼谷国际合唱节

This year the High School Choir participated in the Bangkok International Choral Festival 2022 hosted by Bangkok International School. After a long two years of COVID, this was a great opportunity for the students to make beautiful music together with ten other international schools from South East Asia. Dr. Elaine Choi from Canada was our guest conductor. Her hard work and organization culminated in a wonderful festival concert. Our students were able to work with others, make new friends, experience new learning styles under Dr. Choi, and most of all, enjoy the experience of singing in a 270-person choir. Soloist Hyorim Ahn and beatboxer Clark Zhang represented Dalat in two pieces of music. The boys in our bass/tenor section, Dominic Cheang, Sean Lee, and Braden Abdulla were able to lead student groups in the body percussion section. We are proud of our students’ excellent performance.

Hyorim Ahn: “This was my first choir trip and how everyone sang and performed was inspirational to me. I stepped up as a soloist which scared me, yet I was glad I did. It helped me be more confident and gave me an experience I will never forget. I am now more confident and feel I can even lead in my section at school. I enjoyed the trip, because it was great making new friends and bonding with the other choir students and Ms. Goh.”

Clark Zhang: “I chose to go to this festival because I love music. At the festival, I was asked to take a beatboxing part in one of the songs. I was scared because I have never beatboxed in front of so many people or in this context. I was afraid to mess up, but I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. It was a wonderful experience, and I am glad I chose to be courageous. With encouragement, I had a great experience I will never forget. I have finally found my niche in the art that I love, plus I was able to have a lot of fun with my choir friends.”

The Dalat Life Prep Program

달랏 생활 준비 프로그램     生活准备计划

The Dalat Life Prep program gives high school students an opportunity to learn practical life skills, which help prepare these students for college and adult life. Dalat high school students in the Life Prep program may live in the dorms for one quarter or one semester to experience community, strengthen relational skills, and practice independence in a nurturing environment.

The Life Prep Program incorporates these ten skills, rated most valuable by Dalat alumni: personal finance; mental health and managing stress; personal health and self-care; personal safety and self-defense; cooking and nutrition on a budget; home cleaning and maintenance; laundry and mending; car safety and maintenance; interpersonal skills and etiquette; organization and time management. Next week is our mid-term break, but it is also the last big university recruiting week for a while. Don’t miss the many online, KL, and Penang college recruiting events listed in the Reminder Announcements section.

The Parent Community Corner

학부모회 코너     家长社区角

Much coffee and tea have been enjoyed over the last few weeks as Dalat parents organized informal grade-level meet-ups to “Reconnect” with other parents. The format has been simple: two or three parents organize the event and arrange for hot drinks and treats, and then they lead attendees to introduce themselves, ask questions, and share helpful information. For many, it has been the first time since the pandemic they have been with parents from the same grade level. If you have attended one, I’m sure you’ll agree, the opportunity was much appreciated by all!  If you’re interested in hosting a grade-level gathering, please get in touch with PTO for more information.

Dalat Athletics is seeking Head and Assistant Basketball Coaches to train and lead our U13 Boys and Girls Basketball teams (mostly Grade 7) – as well as Middle School Boys and Girls Basketball teams (older Grade 7 and Grade 8). Coaches will work with athletes of varying skill levels, so the first priority is to instill the fundamentals of the game.
