HOPE Recovered Newsletter September 2022

HOPE Recovered blossoms

We are seeing impressive progress both in the library among primary school children and in the youth programs among teenagers. We are already looking ahead to the final events of 2022 and can already thank our Lord for an outstanding year!

7x70 000 Fundraising Challenge

The vision of HOPE Recovered is to establish a fountain of hope for the young generation. Let us rescue them from falling into a hustling lifestyle, trying to survive without making their lives count or achieving significance. To escape the poverty cycle, they need access to high-quality educational assistance, the opportunity to learn vocational and entrepreneurial skills, and, most of all, to find purpose in life as they follow Jesus. They have the potential to make a significant difference in their families and communities as they follow God's beautiful and satisfying plan for their lives.

With only 7 individuals, organisations or companies who make a significant contribution, HOPE Recovered can acquire a 5ha property on the edge of the township to establish such a fountain of hope. Thanks to the development of the exchange rate, the contribution per person could be reduced to 70,000 CHF, USD or EUR. Are you one of these outstanding individuals?
Pledge your support today and enable us to submit an offer to buy the property. Read more about this challenge.
Is this the future fountain of hope pouring into the neglected and disadvantaged community of Lethabong (meaning: a place of joy), replacing the hopelessness with joy and bringing its name to life?

Youngsters are excited

The computer centre had to be relocated to create more space for the growing number of participants. The young people are enthusiastic and do not want to miss a lesson. Two boys should have gone to school on a Saturday, but the computer course was more important to them.

Unfortunately, one of the laptops got out. There is a problem with the hard drive as well as the battery.

HOPE Recovered faces the following challenges:
  1. Transport: The 7-seater car is no longer big enough. More than 2 trips to pick up the youth in the township are not possible, as this would take too much time.
  2. The 5 laptops sponsored by Nedbank will not be enough when we start computer courses.
  3. Since the teenagers are in the founder's house all day, these young people need to eat (and they eat a lot). But the kitchen is not designed for this number of people.
Please pray with us for good solutions.

Youth Discipleship

The Saturdays are long for the youth. The computer classes in the morning had to be shifted for one hour due to load-shedding. With the already summerlike temperatures, the young people were exhausted during our discipleship program. Please pray that the Holy Spirit is still able to work in them, especially as we cover the topic of baptism in October.

Youth is eager to learn

When the Library for Children officially closes its doors, some teenagers ask for help with their preparations for maths exams, especially now at the end of the term. Raphael loves mathematics and gladly helps out.
Some teenagers come to the Library for Children to study. Some of them are eager to get involved with the kids as well. We are so grateful to see a new generation with a heart to help and bring change to this community.

Library

What a privilege to work with these fantastic kids! They are teaching themselves in very creative ways. Some are reading together, and others make up their own games. One said a word, and the other one had to find it on the flashcards on the table :)
Wednesday is bible story time at the Library in the township. This girl volunteered to read the story of the prodigal son. I'm so proud of her! She not only read the story but also showed the pictures and translated it into the local language for the little ones to understand better. She will make an excellent Sunday school teacher one day!
One of the volunteers shared the following story: It is great to see the little ones excel in reading. My heart jumps when I see (well, hear) their progress. The other day I was reading with one of the new children. He is in grade 5 and was mumbling and stuttering. I was teaching him phonics, and after a few minutes, I let him reread the same passage. I could understand what he was reading! What a success!

Surprise visit

Mrs Pretoria Tshwane Finalist and initiator of the Library for Children, honoured us with a surprise visit. She was reading with children and was impressed not only with their physical growth but also their progress in reading. Thank you for investing in the children of Lethabong.
Vote for our Mrs Pretori Tshwane, Gontse Richli. With your vote, she would like to continue the work with HOPE Recovered and close the gaps in our society by educating vulnerable children and young people in Pretoria.

Milk cartons to insulate the library

Summer has already arrived. The library with its corrugated iron shell, often feels like an oven. So we collected milk cartons. The aluminium foil on the inside should serve as insulation. The preparation is a lot of work. The milk cartons have to be cut open and cleaned. The milk residue leaves traces of all colours and an almost unbearable smell. Then the milk cartons are stapled together and mounted on the ceiling of the library. We will first insulate the roof and later maybe the walls too, especially those exposed to the sun. We hope that this recycling project will not only help against the summer heat but also reduce the dust in the library.

From Good Intention to Good Action

Did you ever wish you could make a difference but didn't know how? Here are some ideas to step into significance:
  • Visit the expanded Library for children in the township. We would love to take you on tour.
  • Join the board of HOPE Recovered. We need a treasurer and a secretary.
  • Inspire others about the work of HOPE Recovered, raise awareness of the challenges of children and youth in the township and raise funds for the necessary HOPE Recovered Center in the township.
  • Offer your time and get involved in the lives of the children and youth as a volunteer.
Don't hesitate to get in touch with HOPE Recovered if you are interested in building the Kingdom of God with us - for His glory, for His honour and His praise.

Support a talented teenager

One of the teenagers who attends our programs makes cars out of wire. This children's toy comes with a steering wheel to drive it and can open doors as the real one. He wants to use his talent and start a small business. He said he needs about R3000 (180 USD) to extend their house so that he and his older brother can have a room for themselves. The parents with their 4 children currently live in a 2 room shack.
Buy this truck for R450 (26.50 USD) and support this young man. Contact Raphael if you are interested.

The Annual Report 2021/2022 is here
