[NEW] High Stakes Culture: How Do We Understand Abortion, Control, and Reproductive Justice?
October 12, 2022 | 5:30-7:00pm
Michigan League, Vandenberg Room (second floor), 911 N. University

A conversation between scholars and students about the cultural logics that are driving the rapidly transforming landscape of access to abortion and birth control in the United States.

Scholars Lisa Harris (Obstetrics and Gynecology and American studies Phd), Ava Purkiss (women's and gender studies and American culture), Ruby Tapia (women's and gender studies) and SaraEllen Strongman (Afroamerican and African studies) with moderator Angela Dillard (Afroamerican and African studies, Residential College, history) will engage students in a conversation about choice and power and justice.

We will ask questions like:
  • How do we understand the new landscape of reproductive rights?
  • What histories of reproductive rights are useful to know?
  • What cultural logics are driving changes now?
About the series: High Stakes Culture explores the ongoing “culture wars'' and recent cultural flashpoints igniting across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs. The foundations of public education are being questioned as books are banned and Critical Race Theory is challenged. States are passing laws that attempt to ban or criminalize medical treatment for trans teens and children. And a landmark abortion ruling has spurred national conversations about reproductive justice.

What is at stake in the ways we understand culture and cultural conflict? The High Stakes Culture series brings U-M scholars and students together to bring humanities perspectives to bear on compelling issues in the culture now. Join us as we ask: How and why does culture matter so much?

[NEW] Trotter Distinguished Leadership Series
Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm in Trotter Multicultural Center's Multipurpose Room

The social climate of our country has many of us asking questions about voting, personal pathways to careers in democracy, and the impact of intersectionality on our perspectives and participation. This month's Trotter Distinguished Leaders Series event provides an opportunity for students to unpack these questions and more. We are excited to present Democracy and Debate featuring Purvi Patel and Rev. Nelson Pierce, Jr. We will be joined by moderator Neeraja Aravamudan as we explore ways to continue to increase healthy discourse from the political and public service sectors both nationally and globally. This event will be hosted Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm in Trotter Multicultural Center's Multipurpose Room. It will be a unique opportunity to engage with folks with broad experiences and we hope that you will join us!

About the Speakers:

  • Purvi - Purvi Patel is the Director for Campus & Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. In this role, she leads programming, strategy, and youth engagement efforts on democratic engagement, service learning, and dialogue on political polarization. She is on the front lines of preparing young people to have the tools, dispositions, and competencies to strengthen democracy. Purvi has been an administrator in American higher education for over ten years with a focus on student engagement, diversity, and civic engagement. She is trained in social justice mediation, intergroup dialogue, and bystander intervention. Most recently Purvi was a New Bridge Fellow focused on Trans Atlantic Relations with Atlantik-Bruecke.
  • Nelson - Rev. Nelson Jerome Pierce, Jr. is the Grassroots Power Builder for Democracy for America and the senior pastor of Beloved Community Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. From the preaching in the pulpit to marching with and protecting protestors, and from electing progressive candidates to organizing communities for change, Rev. Pierce’s life-long mission has been the liberation and well-being of all oppressed people, beginning with Black people in America. Rev. Pierce’s body of work includes equipping churches with holistic, progressive education around issues of sex and sexuality, fighting to end the police killing of Black people, expanding voting rights, protecting workers rights, and helping Black students develop and use their power.

LAUNCH Natural Language Processing Annotation Study

For this study, LAUNCH are looking for students to help us annotate a collection of US news articles by mainstream media. In this task, you will read the article and label events and actions that have an innate moral basis. The labeling will be done according to Moral Foundation Theory, which was created by social psychologists to understand how morality varies between cultures. We will provide the necessary training (detailed in next paragraph) to familiarize participants with moral foundation theory.

Before you officially participate in this project, we will provide a training session to get yourself familiar with the basis of moral foundations and other necessary materials. Prior to the training session, you will be assigned a very low workload of readings to assist you to grasp some prerequisite skills. After the training session, you will complete a trial annotation on one news article. We will collect and assess your responses to determine your eligibility for this project. The training session (including both prerequisite reading and trial run) does not count towards the total hours specified on the contract.

The complete annotation task includes 3 articles reporting on the same news story but by different media outlets across the political spectrum. Each article has around 600 words on average. The task should take about 2 hours to complete. Each participant will receive 25 dollars to complete a single task. We expect students can finish 3-4 tasks each week, totaling a minimum of 36-48 tasks for this semester.

If you are interested in participating in the study, please fill out this survey:https://forms.gle/PfZT5L7pj41UPuXq6. We will reach out to you shortly. Thank you!
