Olli Mustonen’s two concerts last weekend – with Richard Tognetti on Saturday night, and then as soloist on Sunday – revealed his grounded approach to grandeur and his powerful use of light and shade. By now Olli will have returned to Finland for performances of Rachmaninov’s Variations on a Theme by Paganini. However, with his composition Eroico featuring in UKARIA 24 later this month, something of his music-making remains as a friendly haunting.

From Friday 21 October, please look out for our 2023 Early Release brochure in your mailboxes – both kerbside and electronic. This is our first hard copy brochure since 2020 and offers a sneak peek at next year’s calendar, with complete seasons to be announced in February and June 2023. Tickets for the Early Release concerts will be on sale from Friday 21 October, when all details will be available on our website.

UKARIA 24

‘A journey from some of the greatest seventeenth-century musical innovators, such as Bieber and Westhoff, through to the current day with contemporary voices such as Luciano Berio, Olli Mustonen and Garth Knox.’

– Lawrence Power

Lawrence Power and his troupe of extraordinary friends – Vilde Frang, Torleif Thedéen, Alessio Bax, Sophie Rowell, Sharon Grigoryan, and Amanda Grigg – join us in just three weeks. Lawrence travels to us after his own West Wycombe Chamber Music Festival, which took place in late September. In a 2021 film about the festival's 10th anniversary, Vilde Frang and Nicolas Altstaedt, among others, discussed what draws them back to West Wycombe each year.

‘It’s always very significant for me personally to participate in this atmosphere that Lawrence has created. […] I think simply he is the best violist in the world, he is a true hero of mine.’

– Vilde Frang

UKARIA ON TOUR

Lawrence Power and Friends – Pier 2/3 (Sydney)

This year we break new ground with UKARIA On Tour, a program designed to maximise the exposure of visiting artists considering the difficulties and environmental impacts of international travel. Through this initiative, Lawrence, Vilde, Torleif, and Alessio will give a special performance after UKARIA 24 at the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s new home, Pier 2/3 on Sydney Harbour.

UKARIA On Tour has only been possible with the support of Ulrike Klein AO. Ulrike’s support will also enable Lawrence to work with musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music, culminating with him leading them in concert later this month.

Rather than travelling for a single weekend of performances, these artists are being supported to share and connect with the Australian musical ecosystem over an entire month.

Monday 31 October 7.00PM (Sydney)

Please note that UKARIA is not presenting this concert. The following link directs you to the ACO’s website.

ÂME AT UKARIA 24

Âme is Lawrence’s production company founded with Jessie Rodger after they worked together on the film series ‘Lockdown Commissions’. One of their first productions as Âme was a performance of the 3 Berceuses for viola and piano, by Thomas Adès, a piece commissioned with assistance from UKARIA. These films will be shared during the opening concert of UKARIA 24, Once Upon a Time, allowing you to see and hear Lawrence perform alongside the composer, Thomas Adès. UKARIA also helped commission another work of Âme’s, 64 Variations. In this film, Lawrence performs Bach’s Chaconne amidst the shadows and decay of an old London barge house, accompanied by a soprano and dancer.

UKARIA ON FILM

In addition to showing Âme’s work during UKARIA 24, Jessie Rodger and audio engineer Brett Cox will be on site to shoot a film about UKARIA. It will tell the story of our origin and those who continue to tend this vision: gardening staff, venue management, artists and musicians, our Founder Ulrike Klein, and our CEO Alison Beare. The film will highlight how UKARIA remains grounded in the Adelaide hills but is moving beyond this geographic space: epitomised by UKARIA On Tour, and the film itself.

We will share this film later in the year and so please subscribe to our YouTube channel to be notified once this is published. A short film of Konstantin Shamray at the piano has already been uploaded to this account.

NIGHTFALLS – MARK ATKINS AND ERKKI VELTHEIM

Please join us for a showing of Nightfalls, celebrating Mark Atkins' unique gifts as a poet, storyteller, singer-songwriter, and didgeridoo virtuoso in a semi-staged program imagined as a gathering around a campfire.

'This is a wonderful opportunity for me to celebrate and honour my Yamatji heritage through my contemporary practice,' Mark says. 'The best moments happen around the fire late at night under the stars... I'm really excited to share these histories, real and imagined.'

Nightfalls was commissioned by Tura with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and Ulrike Klein AO. This showing is presented by Tura in association with UKARIA as part of Finding our Voice, which is supported by the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative.
