St. Johannes Lutheran Church

Make donation online to St. Johannes Church

We Have a new look online!
Thanks to the hard work of Pastor Aaron, we have a new website.  Please check it out at www.sjcharleston.org.   We would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to visit the website and leave us a great review.  The more positive reviews we have, the higher up in the search results we move.  It only takes a few minutes.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS is today at 4:30pm!
Invite your friends and neighbors . . . Honoring St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals and Ecology.         . Join us as we gather in our parking lot to commemorate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and to give thanks to God for all of His creation. This is a free event, open to the public, and will include social time and treats for   everyone.  Everyone is encouraged to bring donations of pet food and/or supplies  for the Charleston Animal  Society.  We will also be collecting pet food supplies until the end of October and donations can be put in the wagon located in the narthex.

Pastor Aaron’s Installation
On Sunday, October 16th we will be having Pastor  Aaron’s installation.  That Sunday will look a little different.  We will be having our service at 2pm instead of 11:45am.  The installation will be during the service.   Following the service we will be having a reception to celebrate.  If you would like to help by preparing some finger foods for the reception, please reach out to Robbin Mosier at (843)813-8355 or rmosier22@icloud.com.  Please plan on attending this important event in the life of the church.

Citadel Lutheran Ministry Meal, October 24th
Our next meal will be on Monday, October 24th at 6:30 pm.  Please let us know if you would like to help with providing food or serving the food.  And it is not too late to be a Prayer Warrior.  We are looking for Prayer Warriors to “sponsor” one of the incoming freshmen cadets. Their freshman year is very tough and challenging, and we would like to pray for them throughout the school year. If you would be interested in helping by providing food or by being a prayer warrior, please get in touch with Amy at the church office (843)722-8906 or office@stjohanneschurch.org.

11:45 AM Service

First Reading:  2 Kings 5:1-3,7-15

5 The king of Aram had great admiration for Naaman, the commander of his army, because through him the Lord had given Aram great victories. But though Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy. At this time Aramean raiders had invaded the land of Israel, and among their captives was a young girl who had been given to Naaman’s wife as a maid. One day the girl said to her mistress, “I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy.”
7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and said, “Am I God, that I can give life and take it away? Why is this man asking me to heal someone with leprosy? I can see that he’s just trying to pick a fight with me.” But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes in dismay, he sent this message to him: “Why are you so upset? Send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel.” So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of your leprosy.” 11 But Naaman became angry and stalked away. “I thought he would certainly come out to meet me!” he said. “I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me! 12 Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than any of the rivers of Israel? Why shouldn’t I wash in them and be healed?” So Naaman turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his officers tried to reason with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, ‘Go and wash and be cured!’” 14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was healed! 15 Then Naaman and his entire party went back to find the man of God. They stood before him, and Naaman said, “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.”

Psalm 111
Praise the Lord!
I will thank the Lord with all my heart
as I meet with his godly people.
How amazing are the deeds of the Lord!
All who delight in him should ponder them.
Everything he does reveals his glory and majesty.
    His righteousness never fails.
He causes us to remember his wonderful works.
How gracious and merciful is our Lord!
He gives food to those who fear him;
    he always remembers his covenant.
He has shown his great power to his people
by giving them the lands of other nations.
All he does is just and good,
and all his commandments are trustworthy.
They are forever true,
to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity.
He has paid a full ransom for his people.
He has guaranteed his covenant with them forever.
What a holy, awe-inspiring name he has!
10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.
All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom.
Praise him forever!

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-15
Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach. And because I preach this Good News, I am suffering and have been chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained. 10 So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory in Christ Jesus to those God has chosen.
11 This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him. 12 If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us. 13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. 14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them. 15 Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.

 The Gospel:  St. Luke 17:11-19
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 17th chapter:   C: Glory to you , O Lord.
11 As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. 12 As he entered a village there, ten men with leprosy stood at a distance, 13 crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14 He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.
15 One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” 16 He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.”
The Gospel of the Lord.    Praise to you, O Christ
