A Great Crowd at the Country Draft!

We sure hope all of the students in attendance this past Saturday had as much fun as the Civitas staff. We were very excited to see so many new students attending their first Civitas event. Our two hours together rushed by with dynamic guest speakers, three rounds of trivia (congrats to the two "eights" who won!), and the drafts of countries in separate session groups. Those in attendance, and any faculty advisors, should have received a list of countries your school now has via email. They are also posted on our website for each session under High School in the homepage menu.

The next important step, once students know the countries they'll be representing at their Model UN session, is for every single person to sign up for the Model United Nations. In addition to researching your countries between now and your session, begin considering resolution topics. Since each session has 7 or more schools, we can only accept two resolutions per school. We encourage students/countries to collaborate with resolution writing this year. Final resolutions are due NO LATER THAN NOON on the Wednesday before your session so we have plenty of time to create the master copy and send it to FedEx for printing.

Stop by the Open House at the World Community Center on October 16
As most of you know, Civitas relocated last year to an office in the World Community Center near Forest Park on Skinker Blvd. All WCC tenants, various non-profits who do great work in the St. Louis area, will be a part of an Open House event at the WCC on Sunday, October 16, from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Stop by and see the Civitas booth and learn about other interesting organizations.
Celebrate UN Day at the International Institute
Saturday, October 22, 5:00-8:00 pm

Through the theme, "Nourishing Peace," the United Nations Association of St. Louis, co-sponsored by Civitas, is planning a celebration honoring UN Day, the official creation of the United Nations in October of 1945. The national UN Day theme is "Nourishing Peace," how food security and peace are intertwined on the international scale. Food insecurity in the St. Louis area will also be discussed. The event will begin with several speakers (including St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones) delivering short remarks, followed by a panel of local experts who will discuss many components of food and peace. Dance and music performances are also on the agenda, and special awards will be presented to five individuals in St. Louis who help work towards the goals of the UN. There will be plenty of time to mingle, too, and enjoy good food and beverages. The event will be at the International Institute of St. Louis (IISTL): 3401 Arsenal St., St. Louis, MO 63118. It is free to the public, but please register at the link below. Civitas students can earn up to 3 hours for attending all or part of the celebration.
