Hi <<First Name>>,

So now that it has 'warmed up', it has 'warmed up' too much, to the point that we are all melting!  Never happy hey!

Old Leeuwkop Prison (Asidlale Adventure Park)

This was a first-time ride for most of us and what a pleasant surprise.  LOTS of climbing - jeep track - single track - technical patches and not so technical.  The start/parking area is at the old Leeuwkop Golf Club which closed down after mismanagement and Covid.  They have a mobile cart serving refreshments for after your ride.  Here is Ivan's Strava feed so you can have a look-see:  Leeukop Prison Trails with some DocTjoms. | Ride | Strava.  They open at 06h00 so get there early to avoid the heat.

Vredefort Dome/Parys ride

Had a good turnout for this very popular ride.  The heat however was exhausting and the corrugation on some of the roads challenged quite a few personalities!

joberg2c - day 9 report
By Mike Wade

Day 9, the final day of my Epic Journey had arrived. We had done more than 800km on the saddle, and probably climbed more than 10 000m in the 8 days so far.

The day, as usual started with me trying to get the sore body to move after spending the night on a mattress on a tent floor. After a good breakfast we all headed to the start line. As I looked around at my fellow racers, I thought to myself this was a bittersweet moment. Tomorrow my bum would not be in a saddle again, I would not be sleeping in a tent again.  I would however also not be laughing and riding our beloved country with my friends again, creating so many extraordinary and special memories.  So far, we Docs had always crossed the finish line together and today would be no exception. We stayed true to the Doc motto and left no one behind.   Shaun unfortunately was not well enough to ride, so Brett kindly stepped in as my partner. As was our group’s custom, we started the day with our morning dance, some of us displaying far more rhythm than others. We then sang Happy Birthday to Glen and Tim. We knew today would be muddy, but after day 3’s muddy conditions, we weren't scared of mud.

joberg2c 2022 - Super Supporters
By Glenda Wade aka Mrs Batman

This Joberg2C journey has been a long time coming… We had planned for it since 2019…. My PomPoms have been ready since Batman decided that this 9-Day Adventure was what he want to do to celebrate turning 50… Unfortunately 🦠Covid had other ideas and the J2C was postponed then postponed again🥺 BUT FINALLY after a looonnnggg wait I could shake the dust off my PomPoms and the journey was about to begin!!!

We had few training rides building up to the Joberg2C… like a little double loop of Suikerbos Rand… a few Vaal rides.. and we had our loyal Cheerleaders 📣 along at all of these rides. Shaking a PomPom is an art that needs to be practised!

After watching the weather🌦🌨⛈ and packing and repacking… FINALLY the day arrived!!! A beautiful, if slightly chilly morning.. Friday 22 April … we headed off to Heidelberg. I made Batman drive to the start at Karan Beef because I knew that for the next 9 days I was going to be behind the wheel. My car was packed to the roof.. and even on the roof(rack)!! Who would have thought I’d need soooo much stuff!!  The excitement was palpable and even though I wasn’t riding I had a horde of butterflies 🦋 fluttering away in my tummy!

Berg & Bush Descent - June 2022

By Ivan Bailie

Unfinished business! In 2018 several of us DOCS entered the 2-day B&B event. To cut a long story short that weekend the event was rained out and we only got to do 40km on the Sunday. BIG Disappointment!

In the first week of June 2022 a free B&B Descent entry was advertised on one of the groups that I subscribe to. I immediately put up my hand and grabbed the entry. Very grateful to the person who let me have the entry. As you all know these events are not cheap.

So, as most of you know I am reasonably fit but I don’t like the technical stuff much, and B&B is technical and a good test of your trail fitness. So now I had to do some homework and consult some peeps who had done the B&B descent event. Thanks to Lisa and Mark for all the coaching tips. They both said I needed and go and sharpen my tech skills at Thaba. I don’t like Thaba much because I own several plots of land in that bike park. But I did what I had to do and did several prep rides at Thaba. I soon realised that my tech skills and trail fitness was sadly lacking. However, I persevered and built my tech skills and trail fitness. Now I was ready for B&B.

As is customary, a week before B&B I started to weather watch. Bad weather was forecast. Lots of apprehension and visions of 2018 where we could not do the event.
