City staff, and both appointed and elected officials passed out over 1,500 flower leis and tubs of candy to parade-goers. We thank Uniting Pride for holding this family-friendly event in our Small City!

City Seeks Community Development Director
As a member of the City’s executive management team and under the general direction of the Mayor and the supervision of the City Administrator, the Director of Community Development Services has overall responsibility for land-use planning, zoning, economic development, various grant programs, and compliance with building and property maintenance codes. The City of Urbana, Illinois is seeking a proven leader as its next CHIEF OF POLICE!

Under the guidance and authority of the Mayor and the 7-member Urbana City Council, the Chief leads the Urbana Police Department and its staff in fulfilling the Department's mission. The Police Chief also works collaboratively with the Urbana Civilian Police Review Board.  

The ideal candidate will have experience in community policing and police management in a small but richly diverse community. The ideal candidate will also have a track record that clearly aligns with the City of Urbana's commitment to:
  • Collaborative problem solving via a partnership between the police and the community
  • An educated, compassionate and measured response toward individuals  who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis
  • The practice of prioritizing de-escalation during encounters with the public
  • Supporting victims of crime regardless of their immigration status
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science, public administration or a related field. An advanced degree in an appropriate field is highly desired. Go here to read the complete brochure.

The City of Urbana received almost $13M as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The purpose of these funds is to support state, local, and Tribal governments in their response to and recovery from the COVID-19 public health emergency. To coordinate the public engagement that will inform ARPA fund priorities, draft a plan, solicit and review proposals, and ensure that processes and outcomes are properly documented and reported according to Federal guidelines, the City has entered into an agreement with the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission for staff support in administering the ARPA funds. Go here to see more.

Charles Marohn, Strong Towns President will be giving a presentation titled Going from Strong Towns Ideas to Implementation where he will help attendees learn Strong Towns principles and how to bring them to fruition in your area. This session is targeted for city staff, elected officials, and community advocates. All others are welcome, especially UIUC students and faculty with conflicts with the afternoon presentation. Walk n' Roll to School Day (WRTSD) will be Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 7:30  to 9 a.m. The City of Urbana will be at Dr. King Park to celebrate with Dr. King Elementary School students. Mayor Marlin will give a proclamation, talk with students, and confer with staff. Our Urbana Police Force Bike Squad will also be on hand! Go here for more.

Downtown Urbana has been an important place for residents, students, and visitors over the years and recent investments in public amenities have had a positive impact on the urban fabric of downtown. However, the City realizes there is still work to be done in creating a vibrant downtown that serves the surrounding residents, university community, and the whole of Urbana. This study is an opportunity to engage the community to identify an actionable plan to improve the public realm in Downtown Urbana. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. The Champaign-Urbana Folk and Roots Festival is an all-volunteer-run, grassroots festival that brings together national, regional and local artists and folk organizations for over 80 high-quality folk performances and participatory activities throughout downtown Urbana. The festival includes performances, dances, instructional sessions, jams, song-circles, family activities, storytelling, instrument-making and much, much more! The festival has a particular interest in evolving and unique forms of folk music and art, especially forms that break down barriers between audience and performers, while also providing the occasion to preserve local traditions and histories. Trick-or-Treat hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, October 31, 2022. 
A new Mobile Workforce Center will allow the RPC’s Workforce Development program to meet directly with job seekers in the five-county area it serves. The vehicle will travel to events throughout Champaign, Douglas, Ford, Iroquois, and Piatt Counties, utilizing its six-person classroom to talk to people about career pathways in industries like manufacturing, logistics, construction, agricultural technology, business services, and healthcare. RPC staff will also provide job search assistance and help connect residents to local resources using a Wi-Fi hot spot and laptops. Go here to read more about this innovative development.
