Soroptimist International of Loomis Basin
October 2022
(LtoR) New members Lori W. (inducted last month) and Sarah with Jackie

Welcome Sarah to the Club
Sarah was inducted into Soroptimist International Loomis Basin (SILB) on September 28, 2022. Sarah sees the Soroptimist club as a way for her to give back to the community. She grew up in South Land Park and has lived in this area most of her life. She has two kids, who are both away at college. Sarah enjoys hiking, reading, road trips and exploring new places with her boyfriend. She teaches Adult Basic Education and is preparing to lead a tutoring program.  Welcome Sarah to SILB!
Help Us Host the District 4 Meeting
Join us in welcoming members of surrounding clubs to Loomis on October 22 for the District 4 meeting. This event is a wonderful opportunity to see the bigger picture Soroptimist in our region, in one day, conveniently located right here in Loomis. It will be held from 9 AM to 2:30 PM at the Loomis Meeting Spot, 3601 Taylor Rd. There will be a no-host event Friday at Casque Tasting Room at the Flower Farm, 9280 Horseshoe Bar Road. RSVP required.

Register for the District 4 meeting and sign up with Rae to volunteer at the event. The $40 fee will be partially reimbursed by the club and includes continental breakfast and buffet lunch by our own Peggy of P&L Catering. Agenda for District 4 Fall Meeting

We are setting up on Friday night at 7:30 PM, preparing for the meeting on Saturday morning at 7 AM and cleaning up at 2:30 PM. If you or your "Soroptimister" are available to help, let Rae know.
Promote the Ternero Olive Oil Fundraiser
Lori D. is chairing the Ternero Olive Oil Fundraiser and needs your order by November 1 so that she can get the olive oil to you before Thanksgiving.

“This year we are selling the 500ml original flavored olive oil by either a half case (6 bottles for $144) or a full case (12 bottles for $288),” said Lori D.  “The 500ml original flavor will have our Soroptimist label on the front and will sell for $24 each.  We are also selling the 250ml flavored olive oils - garlic, jalapeno, basil and herb - by the single bottle for $20 each, without the Soroptimist label.”

According to Lori D., you can choose to order the oil for yourself or solicit family, friends or other businesses to purchase through you.  Payment can be made through Venmo: @SoroptimistLoomis, by credit or debit card through Zeffy on our website, check payable to: SI Loomis Basin or cash.

Call Lori D. with your questions at 303-263-5574.
Volunteers Needed for Holiday Events
Over the holiday season, our club participates in the Loomis Day Before Thanksgiving Parade and hosts a Club Holiday Party. In order to participate, we need volunteers to be the chair of these events or host the party.  You won't do it alone as others will join your committee. Please talk to President Rae to learn more about how you can lead us in continuing these traditions.
President Rae’s Message

We're off to a great start with a lot of enthusiasm and commitment to our mission.
  • The Eggplant Friend Raiser was a huge success, letting our community know who we are and what we do.  Many new members worked in our booth, sharing their personal stories of why they joined Soroptimist.
  • The program meeting, Soroptimist Celebrating Success, was inspirational as we listened to members speak on various projects, fundraisers and programs our club has been involved with over the past 48 years.  Great SOLT moments.
As president my commitment to our club: inspire passion for our mission, listen to all ideas and support members in their many endeavors.

We Rise By Lifting Others, President Rae
Yes, You Can Join Any Committee
Members are encouraged to volunteer for two committee to support the club and get to know other members. It will take all of us to achieve our club's goals. Just ask President Rae to fill an open spot or someone listed on the committee to join.
Eggplant Festival was a Great "Friendraiser"
We had a great turnout of volunteers to cover our booth at the Loomis Eggplant Festival on October 1. Our friendly demeanor and sharing led to 12 women signing up to get more information about the club. Two of those women attended the next business meeting and both have joined SILB. Welcome Stephanie and Joelle! We also made $223 from the sale of our adorable wine cork creations. Thank you to all the participants!
Encourage Women to Apply for Club Awards

Reminder: November 15 is the deadline for students, teachers and community leaders to apply for SILB Awards!

Help us spread the word. Share information and applications from the Soroptimist Loomis website under the Awards tab.
  • Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award helps women who provide the primary financial support for their families go back to school to increase their employability.
  • Teacher Grants are for Loomis Union School District teachers to fund special projects.
  • The Loomis Soroptimist Investing in Dreams Award is for girls at Del Oro who are community service leaders.
  • The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who make a difference in the lives of women or girls.

Club Celebrates Success at September Meeting
Celebrating Success” was the theme of the September program meeting. According to President Rae, our club was founded in 1974 and has a long history of impacting our community in keeping with the Soroptimist vision of economic empowerment of women and girls through education.

Awards: Karen and Cyndie estimated that the club has given out $417,000 mostly in awards, since 1974.  They explained the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award as well as the Investing in Dreams Award for Del Oro students, K-8 teacher grants and the Soroptimist Ruby award.

Seniors: Jenny explained that the club founded the Senior L.I.F.E. Center and that several members have served as Executive Director and on the board. The club helps fund art, music and exercise teachers as well as cooks two lunches per year.

Endowment: Chris told the group about the Soroptimist Endowment Grants that assist clubs in starting or continuing special projects that improve the lives of women and girls. The Endowment is funded by clubs to help other Sierra Nevada Region clubs.

SOLT: Jackie explained that SOLT stands for “Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training.” She described the Soroptimist local, regional and international organization structure. To learn more, Jackie offered books to borrow, referred to Soroptimist websites and recommended conferences.

Sierra College: Cindy J. and Elizabeth described the success the SI South Placer club had working with the Sierra College’s Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) department, particularly programs for single parents and former foster youth that are well aligned with the Soroptimist mission.

Thank you to Chris and Ashley for making the Blue Anchor Annex room available to the club for this meeting. The club appreciates the delicious appetizers provided by the Club Board members. And thanks to the speakers who described Soroptimist successes.

During the meeting, we held a raffle to support the delegate fund, raising $136. Chris pulled the winning ticket; Ralene was the lucky winner. This basket is similar to Endowment Baskets that clubs prepare for the SNR conference. See the basket contents below.

Meet Penny
Penny has been a member of SILB since 1998. She enjoys the friendships she's made over the years. Penny finds it rewarding to give back to our community through our activities and fundraisers.

She's still working full time in the banking industry and hopes to retire at the end of this year. That and family care take much of her time. Once she retires, Penny hopes to be more involved with SILB again and get to know all the new, wonderful members.  She says, "It's amazing what energy the new members bring to the club!"

Club Shares “Dream It, Be It” Career Program
Thanks to Shari Lynn for presenting to the SI Auburn club and sharing how our club delivers the Soroptimist Dream It, Be It career exploration program. “I touched on the seven sessions, including a brief description of each session's learning objective,” said Shari. “We work with Koinonia Foster Youth Girls and learned that some of the lessons needed more than one session, so we tweaked the program to fit our clients.”  In addition, the club engaged club member Mechelle, Achieve It, to offer her Take a Selfie program and we received a grant to expand the vision board portion of Dream It, Be It.
Support the Club Social Media
See what’s happening and help the club promote activities and fundraisers by joining our social media, suggested Julie M., Social Media Chair, at the recent club meeting. “The more people who follow our pages, the more they are seen by other people,” said Julie. “So invite your friends to like our Instagram and Facebook pages - @SILoomis. Also, if your business is on social media, shoot me your social media names so we can cross promote.”
