Faculty Spotlight
Professor Mohammad Ali Kadivar

Mohammad Ali Kadivar is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and International Studies. His work contributes to political and comparative-historical sociology and it grows out of his experience as a participant-observer of the pro-democracy movement in Iran, but his research agenda moves outward from this case to explore these issues on a global scale, using case studies, comparative-historical methods, and statistical analyses.

IS Classes:
Comparative Revolutions (SOCY3402)
Social Theory (SOCY221)
Iranian Revolution and its Aftermath (Seminar)

Recent Publications: Read Prof. Kadivar's recent 2022 article, Revolution and Social Development in Iran. He also has a book coming out in November, Popular Politics and the Path to Durable Democracy, to be on the lookout for!

Favorite Aspect of the ISP: "Simply its international aspect. Unfortunately, social sciences in the US are overall very parochial and American centered. While American foreign policy often makes a big difference in the livelihood of millions of people around the global, American citizens and politicians don't know as much about other countries. The IS program provides a great opportunity to learn about politics, culture, and society in other countries,"

His news recommendations for following the situation in Iran: "I follow the news on Iran through sources in Farsi mostly. The difficulty with English sources is that they often have some sort of political biases that may not be evident for readers unfamiliar with Iranian politics. I recommend this interview in New Yorker. On both Twitter and Instagram I have been posting material related to the protests. My profiles are public and anyone can follow." Check out his recent explainer article for the Washington Post here.

Music of the Moment: He shared music that has come out of the current protests. You can check out the biggest hit so far, Baraye Azadi شروین حاجی پور برای آزاد  here and another anthem called سرود زن  here. You can learn more about these songs here

Social Voice
The IS community had a wonderful time at last week's trivia event. Here are some reflections from students who attended:

"I thought it was super fun to be with some of my IS classmates as well as seeing new faces at the event. It also tested my knowledge and how there is so much I can still learn about the world!" - Alex Baker '23

"“I really loved the IS trivia night that the peer advisors put on. As a Senior, it has been great to spend so much time with other IS majors. Whether it's through classes like ERIP and the IS Seminar or events like trivia night, I’ve really liked getting to hangout with other members of the class of ’23 before we graduate.” - Sean O'Neil '23

We look forward to hosting more events in the future. Reach out to any peer advisor with social ideas!
