Ruth Hunter

We are excited for Ruth Hunter to be visiting us at Brumfield Gallery. Ruth works in mainly oil and cold wax to create multi-layered figurative paintings, with a large focus on mark and color. Her use of gestural mark making tells a story without words, and her use of color ties in to the viewers subconscious. Ruth's paintings might draw on symbolic contrasts like warm and cool, light and dark. Some of the paintings draw on feelings like loneliness or comfort or the feeling of laying on a beach on a warm day. Her subject matter is the figure, often in solitude or a couple, and the way the figures are portrayed often creates a feeling of familiarity. Ruth’s use of cold wax and oil is crucial in telling her stories, as it adds body, transparency and depth to the oil paint, and allows for easy manipulation and layering.
Ruth will be at the gallery from 4-8pm during Second Saturday Art Walk, this coming Saturday, October 8th. We have just got her new work on the website as we go to press with this newsletter, but the best way of getting a first look will be at her opening on Second Saturday.
