<<First Name>>,

When it comes to training for high performance shooting, there are zero advanced shooting skills to learn/master. High performance shooting is simply executing the basics of marksmanship at speed. That means putting the bullets where they need to go with 100% accountability as fast as we can possibly put them there.

The reason that we stress training to shoot in a high performance manner is that the brain will want to go there in a defensive engagement. Thus, we need to be trained to that level so that our cold and on demand performance is as advertised vs trying to execute skills faster than we are capable while maintaining accountability for rounds fired. And for the competitive shooters out there, being faster and more accurate than your competition is how you win matches/bragging rights amongst your friends.

The below are a few skills that we have found to be highly important when it comes to shooting in a high performance manner:
  • Pulling the trigger straight to the rear at speed. The reason for this is that once we have the visual confirmation for the aiming scheme we are using then it is time to send the round. And we want to send that round right now. Not some tenths of a second latter after the trigger is prepped. Trigger needs to rapidly be pulled straight to the rear without disturbing the sights.
  • Gripping the pistol or the rifle aggressively with the support hand. We need to maintain a grip on the gun with the firing hand such that the trigger finger is able to move independently of the other fingers in the hand. Bio-mechanically this limits the amount of grip pressure we are able to generate with that hand. Over gripping with the strong side hand limits the ability to pull the trigger straight to the rear at speed. However, the support side hand is not limited in this regards. That hand needs to absolutely crush the grip when shooting the pistol. With a rifle, the support side is responsible for keeping the stock solidly mounted in the shoulder.
  • Learning to process what you are seeing at the speed of light. To keep our rounds accountable, we need to use the sights on the gun. What we don't need to do is overuse the sights on the gun and keep refining the sight picture until it's "perfect". Once we have an acceptable sight picture, it's time to send the round into the target. For reactive shooting where we are responding to the sight picture before every shot, this works out to .4 to .6 of a second split time depending on the distance to the target. 10 yards with a handgun should be closer to .4 second. 20 yards likely will be closer to .6 second.

Most of the above skills can be trained in a dry-fire environment and then confirmed with live-fire. We recently had good results training these skills shooting the "Practical Accuracy drill" and the "Designated Target drill". You can learn more about our experiences shooting those drills listening to this week's episode of the podcast.

Be advised that part of learning to shoot in a high performance manner is learning to go "fast fast". And "fast fast" is likely much faster than what is generally comfortable. It is however, the only way to find where things start to fall apart so that fundamental technique can be further refined and perfected. Shooting slow will hide flaws that shooting fast exposes relatively quickly.

There are no advanced shooting techniques. There are only the fundamentals executed with perfection at speed, cold and on demand.
