Worry Less, Live More
Pastor Mary Gilthvedt

The last few years have surfaced a new level of anxiety and worry among all age groups, genders, and ethnicity. The world was affected by a pandemic that temporarily placed new restrictions on our lives. Since the onset, it has impacted economics and physical and mental health. In the news we hear of climate disasters and wars. What is there not to worry about?

Robert Morgan wrote a book that expounds on the New Testament verse in Philippians 4:6. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." His book, Worry Less Live More: God's Prescription for a Better Life, addresses the Christian practices of rejoicing, gentleness, nearness, prayer, thanksgiving, thinking, discipleship, and peace.

I highly recommend Morgan's book. It is so good I am reading it a second time. Enjoy and be encouraged!
Join us for worship

Sunday, October 16, will be Harvest Festival Sunday! We will celebrate and give thanks to God for God's gracious provision and care. During worship, Kardell and Aria Wightman will be baptized and we will all participate in the feast of the baptized. We will worship at 10:30 am (instead of 9:00) with a turkey meal following.

For those who are unable to worship with us in person, join us during our Sunday radio worship broadcast at 92.5 FM Warroad.

There will be no evening worship on Wednesday, October 19.

Children's Bulletins
The October 16 radio broadcast is sponsored by Travis, Jared, and Brandon Landin in memory of their mom, Arlet Landin. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast, please call or email the church office. The cost is $85.
Partners in Prayer

Please pray for those on Zion's prayer list:  Ralland Harrison, Susan Kofstad, Jon Paul Kragness (son of David & Jan Kragness), Grant Olson, Pastor Mary as she prepares to retire at the end of October, the selection of a Call Committee that will be formed after Pastor Mary's departure, and pastoral care and worship leadership between the time of Zion's called pastors.

Click here to continue reading our extended prayer list.  If you have a name of someone you would like to add to the prayer list, please ask permission from that person first. Then, you may contact Zion’s church office (386-1733 or zlcw@mncable.net) to have the person added to the list.
Contemplative Prayer
Pastor Mary Gilthvedt

I have been teaching the congregation some prayer practices during worship on Sundays. If you would like to learn more about contemplative prayer, I recommend the book Creating a Life with God: The Call of Ancient Prayer Practices by Daniel Wolpert. He teaches you how to pray ten different prayer practices that have been used for centuries in the church.
Make plans to attend the Harvest Festival worship service at 10:30 am with a traditional turkey meal (served by Zion's men) following the service.  The Women of Zion will host a fundraiser sale in conjunction with the meal.

Let's take this opportunity to focus on giving thanks for the abundant blessings (the "harvest") we receive from our faithful God and in turn rejoice through the blessing of fellowship, food, and music (the "festival").  You may use this time as a way of honoring God's provision by giving an over-and-above offering. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Thanks be to God!
Note the schedule changes for Wednesday, October 19

Pre-confirmation class, confirmation class, Wednesday school, and worship will not be held on Wednesday, October 19, due to the Education Minnesota (a.k.a. MEA) break.
Welcome to Zion's newest members

Zion welcomes the Abernathys and the Mayfields who became members during worship on Wednesday, October 5.

Ditch Cleaning
The church council would like to extend a big thank you to Kristi Thompson for organizing and overseeing this activity, to Jeff and Shelley Galle for letting us use their home as a base to work from, and to the Galles and Provances for providing nourishment afterwards, and to everyone who helped clean Zion’s Adopt a Highway ditch area.

Backpack Program
On October 4, we met with two of the organizers of the elementary backpack program to present them a check for $700 and help gather the 999 units of food donated by Zion’s congregation. To say the least, they were overwhelmed by the congregation’s response to this activity. Your generosity is very much appreciated by the backpack committee and the children the program serves.

The Warroad Elementary Backpack Program currently provides weekend food for 95 students. Each week these students receives a bag containing the following food units: 2 entrees (mac and cheese and spaghetti-o’s, for example), 2 milks, 2 cereals, 2 snacks, 2 juices, and 2 fruits.

Together in Jesus Christ we are freed by grace to live faithfully, witness boldly, and serve joyfully.

Disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian brought deadly winds, dumped record amounts of rain, and caused catastrophic flooding. Ian, as predicted, was one of the worst hurricanes to hit the United States in decades.

Along with partners in the region, ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response is prepared to respond to Hurricane Ian with immediate relief, including water, clothing, gift cards, tarps, and more. Your dollars are also hard at work in communities around the world through Lutheran Disaster Response, including responses to Hurricane Fiona, the drought in the Horn of Africa, the severe storm in Alaska, the war in Ukraine – to name a few.

Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response make it possible for the ELCA to act quickly after disasters, whenever and wherever they strike.  Such gifts make short- and long-term responses to these crises, including Hurricane Ian, possible. To give to Lutheran Disaster Response to accompany disaster survivors on the long road to recovery, visit this website or designate your gift to Zion as "Hurricane Ian relief."

We pray that God's presence will be felt in the midst of suffering and bring comfort to those who are hurting. Together, we can show our neighbors in Florida and around the world that they are not alone.

The race to pay off our Building Loan
Patrick Frolander, Zion Lutheran Church Treasurer

As we get closer to the amount of funding necessary to pay off the remaining balance of our building loan, it is important that we not lose momentum.  In fact, the opposite should be the goal.  I will use the analogy of running a distance race.

Runners pace themselves to be able to endure the length of a race taking care not to push too hard towards the beginning of the race.  As a runner nears the finish line, they don’t ease up knowing that the end of the race will come soon.  They reach to God for the strength and courage, they reach outward to the spectators encouraging them, and inward to their training to find the next gear and push as hard as they can until they are across the finish line.

We are nearing the end of this journey of loan repayment, and it is important that we maintain our pace and maybe try to push a little harder to get us across that finish line a little faster.  The hope is that we are ready to write our final check in mid-December, and I believe we can get there.  The remaining balance to raise will be posted in the Messenger and E-Messenger below the weekly offering totals.
