Excerpt: Domenic Vitiello on Philadelphia as a Sanctuary City |
Philadelphia has been an important center of sanctuary and reflects the growing diversity of American cities in recent decades. In his new book, The Sanctuary City: Immigrant, Refugee, and Receiving Communities in Postindustrial Philadelphia, Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning Domenic Vitiello argues that sanctuary means much more than the limited protections offered by city governments or churches sheltering immigrants from deportation. In an excerpt from the book’s introduction, Vitiello suggests what is at stake for the immigrants and refugees who have come to Philadelphia in recent years. “The city is a sanctuary from something different for each community—sometimes for each individual or family—and communities’ and individuals’ experiences of sanctuary in the city vary widely,” Vitiello writes. A book launch is scheduled for Thursday, October 13. |

Q&A: Rob Fleming on Design Leadership |
This past summer, award-winning educator and author Rob Fleming joined Weitzman as director of online innovation. In this newly-created role, he is planning for the launch of Weitzman’s new Executive Program in Design Leadership (XDL), a six-month online certificate program. In an interview, Fleming talks about the opportunities for designers to become more impactful, inspiring, and inclusive leaders; the lessons learned for teaching during the pandemic; and the challenges facing the design professions. “The challenges we face as architects are as much a problem as an opportunity to broaden the definition of what makes good design,” Fleming asks. |
