LIFRC Weekly Community Update

October 11th, 2022

Happy Tuesday!

Is it just us, or do the days and weeks and months seem to be flying by at an all-time high-speed?

It's hard to believe it is already mid October!

With so much going on, we wanted to take this week to slow things down and introduce you to one of the newest members of the LIRFC team.

--The LIFRC Team

Weekly Spotlight
If you've frequented the Lopez Island Food Share lately, you may have seen a new face or two.

This week, we're placing one of those faces in the spotlight so that you can begin putting a name to it.

Allow us to introduce you to Johnny Nilsen, the new AmeriCorps intern.
LIFRC: Hi Johnny! Why don't you tell us a bit about yourself?

Johnny:  Well, I am originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, but have spent the majority of the last decade in and around Missoula, Montana. I studied Geography both in and outside the classroom while at the University of Montana.

LIFRC: What brought you to Lopez?

Johnny: After a marathon college career, I spent a winter in Bend, Oregon. There, I became intensely interested in the locavore movement. In other words, I wanted to know where my food came from, the distance in which it traveled, and the systems my food dollars supported (or undermined). Along with that came an interest in sustainable agriculture and equitable food access. I began to look for ways in which I could effect change within this arena. Lopez piqued my interest because of the unique set of food-related challenges it faces. And because Lopez combines community resilience with compassion, I felt I could experience tangible change here.

LIFRC: That's amazing! We are so glad you are here! What do you think so far? Are we living up to your expectations? And what has been your favorite part of being here?

Johnny: Absolutely! I have a deep admiration for the volunteers, clients and partners of the Lopez Food Share. Wednesdays are for sure my favorite part. From start to finish, I am in awe of the compassion and support the Lopez community shows.

LIFRC: We couldn't agree more! The Lopez community is truly one-of-a-kind. It is such an honor to serve and work alongside so many loving individuals.

Johnny: It is really a blessing

LIFRC: Well Johnny, what would you like the Lopez community to know about you?

Johnny: I would love Lopez to know how much I appreciate their openness towards me.

LIFRC: You are here working with us until June 2023 is that correct?

Johnny: It is.

LIFRC: Where do you think you might go from here? Do you have any big plans?

Johnny: Ha-ha. I don't actually know yet. Ask me again in June.

LIFRC: Will do Johnny. Will do. Thank you so much for all you are doing and for helping us serve our community. It's be lovely getting to know you a bit more.

Johnny: Anytime.

AmeriCorps interns have contributed greatly to the growth of the LIFRC and we look forward to nurturing and expanding that program overtime. In the meantime, however, if you are interested in volunteering with the Lopez Island Food Share, please contact Pedro Mendes at pedro@lifrc.org for more information.
