Board of Directors
Kay Parsons Retires

In October, WIAC said said goodbye to its long-standing board president, Kay Parsons. Kay has been a tireless advocate for the enrichment of the local arts community; her service to the arts council has been resourceful and generous.

Artist colleague Mary Ellen O'Connor described Kay as the hardest working person she has ever teamed up with. O'Connor went on to say that Kay's priority, to unite artists across Whidbey Island, and to promote Whidbey Working Artists, Whidbey Art Trail and to attract tourism journalists to the Whidbey art scene, was inspirational.

Kay raised funds to offer free art classes for island children, and to distribute free art supplies to young students at the Whidbey schools. WIAC board member Fe Mischo will carry these programs forward.

The WIAC board will continue the work that Kay has championed, with renewed vigor and with attention to the next generation of artists and educators who make our island the treasure it is today. We wish Kay the best in her future endeavors and acknowledge our appreciation for her long and steadfast tenure of leadership.

THANK YOU from the WIAC board and membership.

Welcome Interim Board President
Katrina Hude

Katrina has stepped into the role of Interim President for the coming year.

She says, “Fostering appreciation for the dynamic relationships built from collaboration motivates me to engage with the Whidbey Island Arts Council. WIAC supports, encourages and promotes discovery through the arts."

"Extending the opportunity to explore, collaborate and expand creative dialogue within our unique environment feeds my own art-making and is imperative to my well-being.”

A glass artist, Katrina incorporates contemporary and traditional glass blowing techniques into her work. She has lectured on and demonstrated her work in Japan and Australia, and in the U.S. she has been awarded numerous artist residencies and fellowships.

Her Greenbank studio is on the Whidbey Art Trail.

His Greenbank studio is on the Whidbey Art Trail.

Mike Holtby, Whidbey Photo

WhidbeyPhoto.com, a portrait studio in Freeland, has just completed a 2023 calendar of the Whidbey Beards Project, featuring 24 of the 45 men photographed.

Calendars can be ordered here WhidbeyPhoto@hotmail.com.

This is a project is ongoing, with another forty expressing an interest to participate. The ultimate goal is to produce a photobook by the 2023 Studio Tour.

Whidbey Island has an unusually high percentage of men with beards, and this project’s goal is to present their uniqueness and diversity and dispel the stereotypes of men who choose not to be “clean cut." It will leave you guessing who these men are, and inevitably you will be wrong.

Grand Re-Opening
INTRODUCING A NEW COMMUNITY CLAY ARTS CENTER

Whidbey Clay Center has operated in Freeland since 2019. Studio membership has almost tripled since then. Owner Cara Jung says, "We have been operating at capacity for about a year now. This new studio expansion will triple our footprint and allow us to better serve our members and community."

WCC offers several different avenues for individuals to become involved in the clay community. It is a membership studio that operates much like an exercise gym. Individuals that are comfortable working independently can join as members and utilize shared equipment, glazes and in-houe firing services. Members can also choose to partake in special firings, workshops and sales.

WCC also offers ongoing wheel throgin and handbuilding classes for students of all ages and skill levels. Jung says, "If you've never taken a pottery class or want to get back into the practice, now is a great time to start."

Membership is not required to register for classes
www.whidbeyclaycenter.com

Some space is still available for November classes. The bulk of new classes will being in the New Year. After November 26th the gallery will be open daily, or by appointment.
