Weekly Encouragement

The gift of Tongues and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is different than the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at salvation.  Spirit Baptism is not a salvation issue, it is an empowerment issue.  Given time and a healthy pursuit of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, I have never seen anyone not experience the gift they asked for.  We do see that throughout the book of Acts, the manifestation which revealed someone had been baptized in the Holy Spirit was the gift of tongues.

No matter what your history is or your current knowledge concerning the gift of tongues, I want to encourage you to pursue this gift as you spend time with the Lord.  Here are some basic scriptures for the purpose and viability of this gift for every believer’s life.

Baptism with the Holy Spirit subsequent to cleansing; the enabling of power for service.

Matthew 3:11; Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4-8.

Why should someone receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

  1. Jesus’ commandment to His disciples – Luke 24:49; Acts 1:3-8

  2. It was promised to the disciples, and they experienced it – Acts 2:36-38
First disciples outside Jerusalem - Acts 8:12-17
First gentile believers received it - Acts 10:44-48
Followers of John the Baptist follow Christ and receive it - Acts 19:1-7
  1. Promised benefits:
Spiritual growth and maturity – 1 Corinthians 14:1-3
    Effective prayer – Romans 8:26-27; Eph. 6:18
    Greater dynamic of worship – Acts 2:1-5, 11; 1 Corinthians 14
Greater Power for witness – Acts 1:8

How can someone experience the Holy Spirit Baptism?

  1. Desire the Gift of God – John 7:37-39

  2. Ask Jesus for the gift of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit – Luke 11:9-13
  1. The Lord is Faithful to give and it is the responsibility of those seeking to ask
  2. Receiving Holy Spirit is a gift and cannot be earned or secured outside of the exercise of faith.

  1. Worship Father God with an open and passionate heart – Luke 24:49-53, Acts 1:1-4

  2. Receive the gift of your spiritual language – God’s promised gift. Mark 16:14-17
I hope these scriptures fill you with a hunger for deeper encounters with the Holy Spirit and to live from a place of baptism (immersion) in the Holy Spirit.

Chris
