Fishing & Diving Reports

Fishing Report

There's lots of fish in the water, but they weren't always biting. Hot spots came and went in all different areas. At times they were all small female Dorado, and at other times they were mostly bulls. Some are approaching 20 pounds, which are some nice steaks!

We had some other varieties too! A lot of boats have found tuna farther out. Big ones were lost, and I did hear of one going 80 pounds. The billfish finally started biting too. We released seven on Saturday, and then they got tough. The full moon wore them out, I guess.

The yellowtail and Bonita were biting deep midweek off San Antonio. The Orcas came in Friday, as there are lots of manta rays around now. We saw a Fin Whale on Tuesday. Some good dolphin pods are out there.

Skipjack have moved in everywhere, but you'll need a very small casting lure. The entire bay of San Carlos seemed to be erupting today as over a thousand jack crevalle, a.k.a. toros, boiled on bait. Friends said that they caught Sierra in the bay. The water is starting to green up, so don't wait too long to get down here!

Diving Report

The first weekend in October, the Desert Dolphins Dive Club from Tucson, AZ held their 63rd Annual Dive Trip to San Carlos.

The Desert Dolphins had excellent visibility (75 ft - 100 ft) and pleasantly warm water temperatures (87° F) at Isla San Pedro Nolasco. The sea lions were playful and everyone in the group saw multiple turtles. Most interesting though was the huge aggregation of Panamic cushion stars (Pentaceraster cumingi). There were hundreds, if not thousands of them, either approaching or leaving the area near La Lobera, north of Lighthouse Dive site. A few divers saw them spawning, with their bodies in a conical shape and a cloudy mist of eggs and sperm being released!

The Ex Santos Wreck was another highlight of the Desert Dolphins dive weekend. Visibility was around 30 ft and the water temp held steady at 87° F. Varieties of schooling fish, octopuses, and macro-life were abundant. A minimum of 4 - 5 different species of sea slugs and nudibranchs were spotted on the bow of the ship and edge of the deck including some of which have rarely been seen in San Carlos! The rare sightings were of a Cerberilla pungoarena (above left) and Noumeaella rubrofasciata (above right).

There's still lots of time for you to go diving...book a trip with El Mar Diving Center now while the water is still warm.

CRRIFS: Secrets of the Male Sea Lion Diet Revealed

Local wildlife biologist, José ‘Eduardo’ Pérez López, presented a summary of his research on the diet of male California sea lions from  August 1 - 5, 2022, at the 24th Biennial Conference of the Society for Marine Mammalogy in West Palm Beach, Florida.

His paper, "Pre- and Post-Reproductive Feeding of Adult and Sub-Adult Male California Sea Lions at Isla Lobos, Sonora, Mexico," represents the culmination of his thesis work for his bachelor’s at UNAM in Mexico City.

Mexico’s Gulf of California is home to 13 major sea lion breeding rookeries with an estimated population of some 31,000 individuals.

Because male sea lions fast during summer breeding season in order to remain in the rookeries and  defend their territory and their female leks (harems), little research exists on their diet.

By collecting and analyzing scat from male sea lions before and after breeding season, Eduardo was able to analyze the unique otoliths (ear bones) of different species found in the scat and thereby determine exactly what the males were consuming.

He discovered that of the more than 30 prey species the males were eating, only 5 were ever harvested by fishermen and then only infrequently. Thus, the bulk of the sea lions’ diet (>86%) consisted of species of no interest to the Gulf’s fishermen.

"This is important information to share so that fishing communities understand that the sea lions do not pose any threat to their commercial fishing activities," he emphasized.

Pérez López moved to San Carlos in 2020 to help Dr. Elsa Coria Galindo facilitate protection efforts for the Centro de Rescate, Rehabilitación e Investigación de Fauna Silvestre (CRRIFS).

Training young scientists and veterinarians to conduct and disseminate research is an important part of CRRIFS’ mission. In addition to his research on sea lion diet, which he began in 2017 under the guidance of Dr. Elsa and her husband, biologist Dr. Janitizio Égido Villareal, Eduardo coordinates the CRRIFS sea turtle nesting protection program, which is now in full swing.

To learn more about CRRIFS’ conservation programs or to report sea turtle tracks/nests or injured wildlife, please email contacto@crrifs.org or call 622-152-9934.

Adopt a Turtle Nest

Did you know that sea turtles often return to the same beach where they were born to lay their own eggs?

Here in San Carlos, we are fortunate to have the CRRIFS organization, led by Elsa Coria and her team of volunteers who are helping to grow the turtle population in the Sea of Cortez by monitoring, protecting, and releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean. Watch this video to see how the recent nests were rescued before Hurricane Kay reached the San Carlos shores!

You too can help, by supporting their "Adopt A Nest" program. Your monetary donation will help to buy the nest management equipment, incubation materials, temperature and humidity sensors, and the volunteer training materials, among other things.

See the flyer on left for How to Donate:
 * $35 USD (750 pesos) is for a Virtual Adoption.
 * $65 USD (1300 pesos) is for an In-Person Adoption.

Prior to donating, please contact Elsa at email: elsa.crrifs@gmail.com, or WhatsApp: 622-152-9934, and provide your name, email address, and cell #. This way the CRRIFS can communicate with you to give you the certificate, pictures, to tell you about the hatchling release date and place, etc. Donations can be made via Paypal (hit Send).

If you have any questions about the program, email CRRIFS at: contacto.crrifs@gmail.com.
