Introduction

(by Paul Oxborough)

Welcome to our October 2022 Newsletter.

This month is all about the preparation for Motorcycle Live, which is heading our way for 10 days in November. First of all, we would like to thank MCIA for giving us the opportunity and support to be at the show. As a new unfunded charity, accessing events like this would be out of our budget, so we really appreciate the generosity of the MCIA in making the show happen for Mental Health Motorbike.

We are ahead of the game with regards planning and putting together a strong team who will be working on the Mental Health Motorbike stand. Our volunteers will be running a shop, selling raffle tickets, offering MHFA support, and creating greater awareness of our work. We will also have Creativity Corner with Weeble and Artist Gary Timms. Gary will create a stunning piece of artwork where a signed copy and print 001 will be a prize in the raffle. So, if you see the stand at the show, stop off and have a chat with us.

At the show we will be promoting our annual raffle, all proceeds will be used to support the training of Race Marshalls and bikers in mental health first aid - this initiative was created by Rich Gibson, who kick starts it by doing the Great Western Beach Race on Sunday 23rd October 2022 (as full story on this in November's Newsletter).

Finally, we are pleased to announce we have smashed our target of attending 75 events this year (at the time of writing we have been at 80 events since January) - we will share an events infographic in December's Newsletter showing the incredible journey we've been on visiting projects across the country.

Hope you are all having a lovely Autumn, and are keeping safe as the road conditions change.

All the best to you all from all the team.

DAVID MARTIN'S FUNERAL
FRIDAY 21st OCTOBER 2022

On behalf of the Mental Health Motorbike team, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the bikers who braved biblical rainstorms to get to Dave’s funeral. We all knew it was going to be emotional, but it was reassuringly comforting to be around so many good people. You all held yourself with such dignity and the team did him proud. My love for you guys is off the scale!
Our love also goes out to Krina, her family and all the extended friends of Dave. I had a chat with them about doing a more long-term tribute in the future. We will continue this discussion with the family.
Once again thank - now let’s #getoutdostuff and make Mental Health Motorbike the go to charity for bikers needing support in the UK. Paul Oxo x
WEEBLE'S WORLD
As the weather starts to turn the focus turns to working on bikes rather than riding them. Still a great therapy to help you focus your mind.
If you are coming to Motocycle Live this year be sure to pop down to meet the team and get some goodies. We need your support more than ever so we can grow the charity and support more bikers.

ITV FILMING "THE MOTORBIKE SHOW"
@ THE OUTKAST CAFE MATLOCK

(By Paul Oxborough & Louise Williamson)

28th September 2022

What a fabulous day with our friends from the Outkast Cafe in Matlock Bath filming for The Motorbike Show with Henry Cole.

The show was aired on Wednesday 26th October 202, and there was an immediate surge in requests to join our Mental Health Motorbike supporters' group. Welcome to all our new supporters, we look forward to getting to know you all over the next few months.

CHANGING OF THE SEASONS
(By Martin Smith)

There is a primal basic instinct that follows the seasons. You don’t need a calendar to know that Autumn is well and truly upon us. There are signs like the cooler air, the smells and colours, and the drawing in of the nights. It flicks a switch within our subconscious.

Consciously we may be considering if it’s time to mothball the bike, and if doing so is there one last opportunity for a ride? For others, the riding continues through the cold, and the rain but maybe not the snow. Whatever the intention it can be an overwhelming time when we may feel a sense of loss at the freedom riding motorcycles offers our well-being.

At this time, I feel that it helps to make a list of things that we would want to do. This may be a job that has been put off where we can tinker in the garage. It may be that new part we wanted to buy and fit on the bike. It might be that we have time to read that book or catch up on all the TV recordings of motorcycle shows yet to be watched. For me it will be planning that next tour in the UK, or perhaps overseas.

Whatever you plan on doing it's important to stay engaged with the community that can support you and values your support through shared interests.

TESTIMONIALS

Testimonial – extract of email from Mike @ Seaways Café to Paul Oxborough

I just wanted to reach out while I had a moment to say " thank you ".
The comment you made about " listen with both ears ". It really made me think about how I focus my attention and how I listen to others. I feel like I am a better person, a better boss, and a better dad as a result. It really has changed my mindset, and as a result is changing my life in such a positive way. I love that I can help, simply by listening.
Thanks again. It really means a lot.

This “thank you” means a lot to Paul and all at Mental Health Motorbike, as it just goes to show how listening skills make a positive impact in all areas of life.
If any of you wish to visit Seaways Café, there are some fantastic local roads for bikers to enjoy and you will receive a warm welcome from Mike and his team at Seaways Café.
