What's happened?
Comments by an oft-accurate display analyst suggest that Apple's next iPhone SE will get a notch and lose the Home button for the first time.
Why does it matter?
A report claims that we should expect the next model to feature a notch, making the device look more like the recent iPhone 14. That would also mean the removal of the Home button for the first time, meaning a switch to the gesture-based interface just like Apple's flagship models.
What's my take?
It's great that there's a more affordable version of the iPhone available for customers, but it's always been unfortunate that Apple's has essentially given them an old model rather than designing something new.
I can understand why: with the SE traditionally offering all the power of the flagship models, giving it a nice design would run the risk of undercutting the top models and damaging sales.
But, moving on to a more modern approach with Apple's excellent Face ID system makes perfect sense, unifying the experience for unlocking and ditching that ancient button. The question is, with Apple now packing the regular iPhone 14 with old hardware (compared to the Pro), what sort of hardware downgrade might the next iPhone SE find itself with?
