Committee Update
We have seen a few changes to the ANZMBS committee since the last newsletter.
After 3 years Mike Packer is stepping down from his role as society president. Mike has done an amazing job seeing the society through the pandemic years that have prevented travel and added to all of our workloads.

As President, Mike recruited new committee members, played a key role in establishing our new website, refined our strategic plan and organised the joint ANZMBS and Physiomar hybrid conference in Nelson, New Zealand last year. Mike, we thank you for your effort and for staying on in the committee as the immediate past president.

Filling his shoes will be difficult but we have our previous vice president Suhelen Egan (UNSW, Sydney) now taking the post as president and we welcome Georgina Dowd (Plant and Food Research, NZ) as the incoming vice president.

We also wish a warm welcome to our newest committee members, Jordan Ivey (AIMS),  and our new NZ Student representative, Hayley Stent (Otago University).

Members Spotlight

Our first member's spotlight features our new President, Suhelen Egan.

We asked Su a few questions to get to know her

Can you give us the elevator pitch of a project you are involved in?
Lately I have been interested in understanding how microbial symbionts interact with and
benefit seaweeds (macroalgae). Seaweeds are critical to the ecology of our temperate
coastline and are one of the largest growing aquaculture sectors globally. Unfortunately,
unfavourable growth conditions can lead to disease and poor productivity. Our research
looks at both the microbial causes of disease in seaweeds and the development of microbial formulations that can be applied as a type of probiotic to mitigate disease, aid environmental resilience, and improve growth.

What does the future of Marine Biotechnology look like to you?
Earlier in my career marine biotechnology was all about bioprocessing and drug discovery,
with a lot of new discoveries being made especially during the biotechnology boom of the
1990s. As we come to terms with the damage humans have caused to our environment,
there is an increasing interest and need to invest in mitigation, preservation, and restoration
strategies that protect marine ecosystems. Here is where I think Marine Biotechnology has a lot to offer. So, I see the future as one where marine biotechnologist work alongside
ecologists, environmental scientists, government agencies and relevant marine industries to meet the challenges faced by living in the Anthropocene.
Could You Be Our New Australian Representative?
We have a vacancy on our committee for new Australian representatives.

This would involve attendance at 6 online meetings per year, engaging to progress our strategic goals and providing a voice as either:

- Industry Representative or
- Student Representative

The role is something you can pick up and run with, we encourage you to have your say and choose your own path. The role can either be yourself or someone you know, and include a statement about your background and why you'd like to join.

Please send your nominations to anzmarinebiotechnology@gmail.com or s.egan@unsw.edu.au
ANZMBS Student Member Internship Award

ANZMBS is pleased to announce the expression of interest for the ANZMBS student
member internship award.
