Choose your adventure: shovel, saw, pruners or digging by hand. This past summer, Nearby Nature hired three interns to begin a prairie restoration project in Hopkins Hollow. They made great strides, but there is much to do to prepare the site for winter and get it ready for spring planting.

Hopkins Hollow Peace Posts
Saturday, October 8th, 10am-2pm

Hopkins Hollow is our name for the wild and natural area along Lincoln Creek, east of Hopkins Avenue.
This special event is designed to engage people from the immediate community. We also welcome our friends and partners who have helped us make this an urban environmental learning space, to join us in celebrating the Hopkins Hollow Trail with Creative Placemaking!
Internationally renowned Ceramics Artist Muneer Bahauddeen will be leading the project. These Peace Posts will be the entrance to the trail that neighbors helped to build. Participants sign up here to come at the10AM or 12PM time slot.

Havenwoods Home and Habitat Fest
Saturday, October 1st, Noon - 2:30 pm
This first-time event at Havenwoods State Forest is designed to bring neighbors together to learn more about home ownership, but also to get folks outdoors to enjoy the Fall weather and discover Havenwoods' history and trails. There will be free food and S'mores and lots of activities for kids and families. Everything is free of charge. In the event of rain, all activities will move indoors.
Breaking Trail with Emily Ford

Emily Ford, the first Black woman to hike the 1200 mile Ice Age Trail in winter will share her experience in a special presentation at UEC Washington Park. The program begins at 5:30 with a 30 minute documentary film of Emily's trek. Following the film, Emily will speak, show off gear and take audience questions.

Free Pumpkin Friday

MMSD West Basin, 4350 N 35th St
Northwest Side CDC and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) are bringing a pumpkin patch to the West Basin to celebrate fall!
In addition to free pumpkins, the event will include crafts, giveaway bags, games, music and West Basin stormwater project information

During the pandemic in-person Sierra Club programming was suspended and outings severely limited. Now, in person meetings with Covid safety protocols in place, "Third-Monday Programs are planned on many topics of interest. Hikes and explorations are planned, to nearby natural areas. Youth Educator & Program Associate[Link to full description]
This person will be part of a team that delivers youth environmental education as well as supports other work of Nearby Nature Milwaukee. The ideal candidate would have some experience in environmental or youth education.
Youth Educator Intern
We are seeking a college level student with an interest in youth environmental education to assist our lead Youth Educator in conducting programs in schools. Must have some availability during school hours. Reach us at Contact@neabynaturemke.org.
Lincoln Creek Greenway Workgroup Coordinator
We are hoping to find a community activist from the Lincoln Creek Neighborhood who will help us to manage the details of this project. We hope this ground-breaking project will bring about a comprehensive work plan for the improvement of the Lincoln Creek Greenway. What else Nearby Nature is doing
While our newsletter normally just highlights coming activities, many folks may not be aware of all the less public stuff we do.
Youth Programming
We provide Environmental Education in youth serving agencies and schools. Typically we have concurrent programs in 4 schools each Spring and Fall but would like to expand that work as our capacity grows. We try and get kids outdoors and sponsor at least 3 remote field trips per season.
Renewal and access to natural areas
This past summer, we hired three interns to do prairie restoration, trash monitoring and community engagement on the Lincoln Creek Greenway, with support from MMSD and other partners.
Last Spring we organized a Lincoln Creek Greenway Summit. Soon, we hope to hire a Lincoln Creek Greenway project coordinator to manage a Lincoln Creek Greenway Work Group.
Celebrating the Environmental Movement in Milwaukee's Communities of Color
Nearby Nature initiated the African American Environmental Pioneer Awards in 2020. 38 community members have been honored and we are now helping plan the 4th annual event.
