What's up this week with
Believers On Mountain Bikes (BOMB)

Weekly Update

Dakota Ridge this week, 5:30.  Park at the Matthews / Winters lot near I-70 and 93. Bring your pads, full face helmet and suitcase of courage. Let's smash some rocks! Always fun to do a Dakota lap post Moab. Bring a charged light, might be able to get a shorter MW loop in too.

We discuss the devotionals prior to our rides. It's been a great season, but with the days getting shorter we will soon end our scheduled after work rides and the devotional discussion as well. With that, this is the last devotional of the year, we do have a few more rides planned. Thank you Doug Bark for all the bike themed devotionals this season!

Devotional
This is the final devotional of the year. I was hoping to write a final devotional about my (Doug) bike. As you know, I’ve had rattling issues with my new bike. I was hoping that this devotional would go something like this - I’ve been patient, I’ve done everything you can possibly do to my bike, I’ve worked with the area Scott rep, Scott and even a bike shop. All of that hard work has paid off - we persevered - and now my new bike doesn’t rattle, or squeak. Unfortunately, that isn’t necessarily the case. At the time of writing this, I just received a new headset and shock to install, but haven’t had a chance to ride. One thing we did help Scott resolve is that some of their bikes were sent with the wrong size headset cups (they are size specific). Turns out their tech manual was incorrect and some, including mine, were sent with wrong headset cups. I now have the corrected size. Anyway, all of this hard work over the last three months reminds me of several of the letters Paul and Peter wrote on working hard at your faith. Why? Because working hard will lead to perseverance and endurance so you can handle anything thrown your way and endure in your faith.
Consider:
Romans 5:3-5: 5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

My Favorite - from Hebrews 12: 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
GOD DISCIPLINES HIS CHILDREN
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a]
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
2 Peter 1:3-9 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

How do we go about building perseverance and endurance? We work hard at it. Not working hard to earn our way to heaven, but working hard to keep our faith and our belief. We surround ourselves with other believers that will lift us up during difficult times, we turn to the Word each and every day, we talk with God - not just a one-way prayer but open our heart to hear what God wants to speak into our lives. We look around and listen to what God has to say to us through others, through nature, through the Word, through the Holy Spirit, through worship/music, etc. Although hard work should correct the rattles of a bike, hard work in our walk with Jesus should produce perseverance and endurance so we keep our faith to the end. Instead of a quiet bike, we will get an eternal life with Christ.
