Happy (almost) October, SWE GGS Members!

We had so much fun getting to meet a few of our members at our FY23 Icebreaker event - see below for a recap! We cannot wait to see some of you at the WE22 conference in October. We also have a STEM outreach opportunity with the STEM Marin Program and a new SWE Youth Protection Policy.

Below is a summary of what is going on with SWE GGS:

STEM Marin Program

The STEM Marin program is a specialty program within the Novato Unified Public school system and includes two STEM pathways - STEM Engineering program and STEM Biotechnology. The program has several events throughout the school year where they need community input and volunteers to help provide feedback and support to their students.

For one of their upcoming events, the freshmen engineering students will build Rube Goldberg machines and present them to the public on Tuesday, October 4th from 6-8pm. They are looking for local engineers to help assess/judge/provide feedback to the budding engineers. If you are interested, please reach out to Katie Stafford, the STEM Marin co-ordinator at the San Marin High School at kstafford@nusd.org. Please also read about SWE's new Youth Protection Policy in the section below.

SWE Youth Protection Policy

If you plan to be involved in a STEM outreach program that works with minors under the age of 18, read on for SWE's Youth Protection Policy. Please ensure that you complete the three steps below for any work with minors under the age of 18 while representing SWE.

All volunteers and staff interacting with youth, including SWE youth advocacy leadership, must complete the following steps:

  • Review the three documents and act in accordance with this policy.
  • Complete the required training course every three years.
  • Acknowledge agreement with the code of conduct and standards for interacting with youth.

Recap of SWE Icebreaker Event

On 10th September, we hosted our first event for FY 2023. It was an icebreaker event with refreshments at the newly-opened Presidio Tunnel Tops park in San Francisco. Be on the lookout for more such events happening soon!
