Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
Much of what we do at Belhaven focuses on the importance of learning from your experiences. Finding the courage to ‘have a go’ is a vital part of growth and confidence for both children and adults alike and fundamental to our school ethos.
Mr. Dryburgh’s outstanding assembly on the lessons that we learn from hard work and effort, drawing on his experiences of disappointment at initially missing out on Scotland Under 18 rugby selection, came at the perfect moment in the term as the Under 12 tournaments set off for their first competitive fixture of the season.
I hope that you enjoy this edition of the Eagle’s Eye over the weekend and that you will help the children to work on their speeches for our annual Spoken English Competition for Forms 1-5 – one of the highlights of the Belhaven year!
What follows is an insight into the breadth of the Belhaven experience – as our brilliant Maintenance Manager, Richie, always says, for all of us ‘every day is a school day!’
Have a wonderful weekend.

The Belhaven Award |
|
The ability to identify the skills that you have so that you can positively impact those around you is one of the keys to happiness. We all have things that we wish we could do better – but do we have a clear idea of what we do well?
It is one of those quintessentially British traits, not to boast about our strengths – but it is surely a weakness not to know how best we can help others.
This thinking has informed the creation of the Belhaven Award.
See how the award will benefit all Belhavians... |

Taking Barnard Castle by Storm! |
On Saturday 24th September, Under 12 girls' and boys' teams travelled to Barnard Castle for the hockey and rugby festival.
Once again, Barney were kind enough to host us on the Saturday evening: the children enjoyed the inflatables and a delicious supper followed by a night in the dorms.
Breakfast on Sunday was followed by a swim and the start of the competitions – click below for the tournament reports to find out what happened on the pitches! |

'A Long Expected Party' |
|
It has been a long time since we hosted our visitors in the Dining Rooms at Belhaven for a proper match tea. As popular as the Belhaven sausage roll has become with children, staff and parents alike, there is not much that beats the impact of a prep school match tea.
After the physical and mental confrontation on the pitch, the friendships that are made as a result of the conversations over a hot meal afterwards are the things that really make an impact – seated alternately, Belhavians and their guests are encouraged to start those connections that will last well beyond their prep school days.
Welcome back, match teas! |

'Marmite Maths' |
|
We must ensure that the vibrancy and creativity of Maths remains at the forefront of our planning. All too easily, Maths can become a word that conjures anxiety for those that find it difficult as much as it delights those to whom it comes naturally.
Recent involvement in the ‘Scotland Rocks’ times tables competition showed the eagerness that exists and the excitement that can be generated by competition.
"...Teaching methods have moved on and these, along with advances in technology, mean that pupils are not only gaining confidence in maths, they are excelling." (School House)
Please read the article, printed in School House magazine to which we have contributed. This highlights maths' vital importance for the future as we aim to educate a generation of problem solvers... |

Making best use of the remarkable location of our school has been a driving force in decision-making in the last two years.
Beach runs, camp-outs, local trips and close links with Coast2Coast have given many opportunities to enjoy the East Lothian coastline - now another exciting partnership with Ocean Vertical will create yet more. |

Pre-Prep News: Autumn Adventures |
|
There has been an autumnal feel in the Pre-Prep, with the drop in temperature and the rainy weather. However, this did not dampen our spirits. The children were out picking vegetables in the Walled Garden and running around in their waterproofs at break time.
In Outdoor Education the children have also been learning about seasons and how life outside changes. They have picked fruit and worked very well in teams. They went on a beach walk looking at the different types of rocks and hunting for fossils. |
