Well done, Mighty Hawk Band!
Area competition took place at PSJA Stadium in Pharr Saturday, October 22. The Mighty Hawk Band and South color guard finished in the top ten of their division. On Saturday, October 15, the Mighty Hawk Band competed in Pigskin at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito. The band was conducted by head drum major Senior, Jacqueline Davis, assistant drum major Senior, Sophia Castillo, and assistant drum major Junior, Jordan Phipps. The MHB was awarded division one rankings. Earlier this October, HCISD hosted their annual band night in which all bands united and performed songs together and showcased their marching talent to the community.
Making a splash
Congrats to the boys and girls Water Polo teams as they finish their season as one of the top 16 teams in the state of Texas. The girls finished their season as District Champions. Both boys and girls teams were Bi-District Champions, area champions, and regional quarter final champions. Great job Mighty South Hawks!
Just keep running
The girls and boys cross country team participated in district on Thursday October, 13th at the Harlingen Sports Complex. The Lady Hawks were able to come out with a big win. Leading the Lady Hawks at the meet was Junior Alexis Fonseca placing second overall, and following her was Senior Ariana Rodriguez and Junior Aliyah Fonseca placing fifth and sixth. In boys Cross Country, Senior Alejandro Hinojosa also qualified for regionals. Now setting the tone for future meets we are excited to see how they perform at upcoming regional events. Overall, we wish our Hawks the best of luck.
Varsity phenomenal football 
The Hawks Varsity football team is closing up their district play. They continue undefeated and will travel to Brownsville to play the Veterans on Friday October 28 at 7:30 p.m. Their last regular season game will be against the Donna Redskins at Boggus Stadium on Friday November 4 at 7:30 p.m. We'll see you there!
Dang! Those dogs have style
Check out these pampered pooches! The Harlingen South Pre-Veterinary Program offers a veterinary grooming service for dogs that could use a nice wash-up. Under the direction of Kristin Rike, teacher of the vet-med applications program, she and her students from South and HHS provide these animals with the luxurious bathing privileges that most owners can't always provide their pets. With each of these grooming services, these students gain more knowledge about proper grooming techniques and skills that can carry into their veterinary futures.
Tip-O-Texas Leadership Camp
FFA officers and members attended a Tip-O-Tex District Camp. The camp provided officers and members an opportunity to have newly gained knowledge of what FFA can do for them, as well as what they can do their own chapter as student leaders. The students participated in leadership development workshops and networked with other members from the District Association. The day ended with a fun set of games in the Agriculture Olympics competition.
South celebrates Hispanic Heritage month
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month, students in South's award-winning Salsa band and choir performed onstage for students and teachers during both lunch periods. Heather Valdez (Junior) led vocals at center stage alongside Jimena Trevino (Junior), further elevating the salsa bands booming rhythm. The following day, choir member, Sergio Reyna (Senior) sang crowds favorites for fellow classmates. The entertainment was an appreciated addition to Octobers celebratory festivities, and onlookers provided roaring applause.
A hole in one!
At the Brownsville River Bend golf course invitational Oct. 7-8, Junior, Jeffery Janik placed 2nd in an individual competition and the team placed 3rd as a whole. Members of the team include Juniors, Jeffery Janik, Seniors, David Sanchez, Thomas Garza, Junior, Hudson Gonzales, and Freshman, Reese Garcia. The girls' varsity team also placed 3rd at the invitational. Left to right are Captain Kylie Mitchell, Daniella Sanchez, Coach Tiffany Albury, Mya Salinas and Kara Jensen.
JV light celebrates a winning season
On October 11th, our JV Light volleyball team traveled to Donna North, where they fought a tough victory against the Mighty Chiefs. Winning both sets, the score was 5-25. Let's go, Lady Hawks!
Varsity Tennis finishes off an amazing season
Our Harlingen South Varsity tennis team had a fantastic run at regionals on Monday, October 20-21st edging out the number 22 ranked team in the state. The team won the bi-district championship at Sharyland Pioneer High School and the area championships against Flour Bluff. The Hawks now are preparing for individual season. GO HAWKS!

PTSA October Students of the Month

Congratulations to seniors Alek Araguz and Emma Castillo for being selected as October's PTSA Students of the Month! These students excel academically and in extracurricular activities. We wish them the best in all of their future endeavors!

Sister Act packs the house
On September 30th, seniors were invited to experience the HCISD Musical production of Sister Act at the Performing Arts Conservatory. The cast from Harlingen High School South include: Senior Cadee Velasquez, Sophomore Adrianna Rodriguez, Junior CJ Heiskell, Senior Bruce Gonzales, Senior Alek Araguz, Junior Sadie Jensen, and Sophomore Karla Rivera

The Homecoming court of the 2022-20223 school year is Count Dylan Anaya and Countess Adanna Canales, Duke Nevan Nieto and Dutchess Aliyah Fonseca, Prince Ethan Garza and Princess Anahi Posada, and voted King and Queen are Caleb Anaya and Kallesta Rocha. South students voted during first and second lunches for representatives including, FFA, NHS, NTHS, class officers, PTSA, Hawk band as well as other clubs and sports. Homecoming reps were presented during half-time at the Varsity football game against Brownsville Lopez. 

Glowing With Spirit

Hawk fans and family gathered to witness the annual burning of the "S" on Wednesday, October 19th. Numerous students, parents, clubs and organizations participated to show their school spirit. Earlier in the week, students and staff wore their best theme week outfits chosen by Student Council. Themes included Adam Sandler, Pitbull, Minion, color war, and favorite celebrities.
 

Hero Run

The Harlingen Police department (HPD) hosted the 8th annual run with the Heroes 5k RGV on October 8th, 2022. The Harlingen South Criminal Justice Blue Knights had 20 participants including the Criminal Justice instructors Nicole Daniel and Robert Reyes. The Blue Knights distributed water to the runners and chanted encouraging words as the runners passed by.
Proceeds received from this event will be donated to the "Make-a-Wish Foundation RGV".

GEAR UP

Our GEAR UP students had the opportunity to tour TSC in Brownsville and looked at the many different programs offered at their campus. Different instructors from the medical, welding, police academy, HVAC, construction and EMT spoke to the students focusing on each individual program requirements, expectations, and goals. During the visit, students were able to do hands on activities, see a simulation lab and speak to college students on their personal study habits and time management routines. #GEARUPWorks
