Marc Dandin Named to Clark School’s Inaugural Early Career Distinguished Alumni Society

A. James Clark School of Engineering alum Marc Dandin (electrical engineering B.S. ‘04, M.S. ‘07; bioengineering Ph.D. ‘12), an early recipient of the department’s Fischell Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering, was named to the Clark School's of Engineering inaugural class of the Early Career Distinguished Alumni Society. Dandin is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he holds a courtesy appointment in the Biomedical Engineering Department.

Dandin’s research interests lie at the intersection of microsystems engineering, integrated circuit design, and biomedicine. His recent work focuses on establishing new paradigms in technology integration for interfacing electronics with biological systems.

Prior to his faculty appointment, Dandin co-founded and led a startup company that aims to develop microsystems technologies for HIV/AIDS viral load monitoring in resource-limited settings. As a bioengineering graduate student, Dandin was co-advised by Fischell Institute Fellow Pamela Abshire (ECE, ISR) and Fischell Institute affiliate Elisabeth Smela (ENME, ISR).

Fischell Institute/IBBR Travel Fellow Celebrates Recent Achievements

This past June, Fischell Institute and IBBR travel fellowship recipient Justin Stine presented at the 2022 Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Workshop in Hilton Head, S.C. Stine's presentation, “Miniaturized Capsule System for Hydrogen Sulfide detection in the Gastrointestinal tract,” was well received and acknowledged by the microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and microsystems communities. Stine was nominated for the workshop's Best Paper Award.

On September 13th, Stine received the Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award in UMD’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)

Fischell Institute Fellow Reza Ghodssi (ECE, ISR) describes Stine as one of the key architects for the new senior undergraduate Advanced Manufacturing Lab (AML) course. Ghodssi has been developing this course with Fischell Institute Fellow Kevin Daniels (ECE, IREAP).The course will be offered to both ECE and bioengineering undergraduate students starting Spring 2023. The course's development is supported by the Fischell Institute, the A James Clark School of Engineering, and ECE.

Now Accepting Fall 2022 Applications for Fischell Institute/IBBR Travel Fellowship

The Fischell Institute and the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology (IBBR) are accepting applications for a joint travel fellowship. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2022.

The goal of this program is to support the success of scholars whose projects align with the shared missions of IBBR and the Fischell Institute toward the translation of basic scientific and engineering research into innovative solutions to biomedical challenges. This fellowship is available to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working with IBBR/Fischell Institute mentors.

The semi-annual fellowship will provide up to $3,000 toward fees and travel expenses to present at scientific/engineering conferences and attend relevant professional development workshops.

Share Your Highlights for the Fischell Institute Monitors

The Fischell Institute is assembling monitor slides and graphics to highlight our affiliate, fellow, and Foundry members' ongoing work. These monitors are located on the 5th floor of A. James Clark Hall and will be used to share updates about our entire community, including those based at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

We encourage you to email fischellinstitute@umd.edu to share your latest work – as well as any photos or calls for collaboration – that you would like featured.
