In this month's issue, SOAP highlights the September activities, achievements and events of SOA staff, with a special feature on Oscar Award-winning Ruby Yang's visit to Sunway University!
Message from the Dean

This month saw the Sunway University campus come to life as its students returned to mostly physical classes and extracurricular activities kicked off in full force. The School of Arts is no different, with a fantastic line of events being planned up till the end of the year. We hope these events help our students develop a sense of community that might have been lost in the past couple of years. On to bigger and better things!

On September 22nd, Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Ruby Yang & her producer husband Lambert Yam dropped by the School of Arts for an exclusive Filmmaker in Focus screening of her heartfelt 2014 film, "My Voice, My Life" followed by a Q&A session moderated by Digital Film Production Programme Leader Azmyl Yunor last Thursday. Our BA (Hons) Digital Film Production, Diploma in Performing Arts, & Department of Communication students thoroughly enjoyed the film & engaged by asking a lot of questions!

Later that evening, Ruby Yang gave a talk for the Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Speaker Series on "Documentary as a Form of Untold Stories That Needed to be Told", moderated by Prof Kenneth Feinstein. We are truly grateful to have such a distinguished filmmaker visit the School of Arts and inspire our students and staff members alike!

2022 Jeffrey Cheah Scholars-in-Residence Programme: Brasenose College, University of Oxford

Dr Mayco Santaella, Associate Professor at the Department of Film & Performing Arts and Associate Dean (International) for the School of Arts, was awarded the 2022 Jeffrey Cheah Scholars-in Residence fellowship to spend four weeks at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. During his residency in the UK, he will visit other partner institutions including Lancaster University and discuss arrangements for a planned summer school and International Arts Festival that will take place in 2023 at Sunway University.

Dr Mayco intends to work on the development of a number of activities that will lead to the publication of a book on the popularisation of heritage and music traditions. He will be working with Dr. Sarah Hill, Associate Professor of Popular Music at St Peter’s College as well as colleagues at Oxford to plan a jointly organised symposium that ideally will be held on-site at Sunway University focusing on the popularisation of heritage and music traditions. Additionally, he will develop a book proposal on the topic for submission to reputable publishers and develop links and explore collaboration possibilities with the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and the School of Arts.
