We Worship

We Gather

CALL TO WORSHIP (Call and Response)

L: We gather, as God's people, bringing our fears and pain, knowing that when our spirits have grown cold,
P: God rekindles the gift of faith in us.
L: We gather, as God's people, hanging our broken hearts on the branches of the tree of life. Knowing that while friends may turn against us,
P: God transforms enemies into sisters and brothers.
L: We gather, as God's people, hungering for healing and hope, knowing that even when life is no picnic,
P: God prepares a feast for us.

PRAISE HYMN: Michael's Choice

OPENING PRAYER (In Unison)

L: Let us worship the God who gathers us! Let us pray in his name together:
Spirit of God,
Enlighten our hearts to the reality of divine presence in our midst.
Let our worship be pleasing in your sight, so that our gathering is an experience of deep communion with you and one another.
In the name of Jesus Christ, this is our prayer.
Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

SCRIPTURE READING(S)

God, open us to hear and receive your scriptures today as you would have us hear them, understand them as you would have us understand them, and to act upon them as you would have us act upon them.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
*Scriptures this morning come from the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition, but should be similar to your pew bibles which are the previous version.

Genesis 1:1-8, 2:1-3 - When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude. On the sixth day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
Exodus 20:8-11 - “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.
Psalm 23:1-2 - The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; …
Psalm 127:2 - It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil, for he gives sleep to his beloved.
Matthew 11:28-29 - “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
L:  The scriptures of God for the people of God.
A: Thanks be to God.

SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

Rev. Pat Whittemore, Tennessee/Holston/Memphis Course of Study Instructor

Instructions for those worshipping with us online: Have bread and juice or an appropriate beverage ready. As we go through the service, one person in your family or gathering should emulate the actions of breaking the bread and lifting the "cup" when Rev. Val does so. While we provide individually prepared portions of the elements for in-person worshippers as a COVID safety protocol, if you are with people in your household, you can use the intinction method (tear off and had each person a bite-sized portion of the bread which they can then dip into one communal cup). As you offer them the bread, say "This is Christ's body broken for you." As you offer them the cup, say "This is Christ's blood poured out for you."

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

L: Lift up your hearts!
P:  We lift them to the Lord!
L: Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, you made us in your image, to love and be loved. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. By the suffering, death, and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you delivered us from slavery to sin and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.
On the night in which Jesus gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood.
P:  By your Spirit, God, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.
Amen.
L:  The Lord’s table is ready. For those worshipping here in person, please remain seated and I will bring the elements to you. For those worshipping online, you may now share the elements with one another.
