Hello  <<First Name>>

Welcome to the latest edition of the CCN newsletter, where you'll find news and updates related to the Network.

This month I had the opportunity to visit the Isle of Arran not once, but twice. The first trip was an FFI Scotland Team outing to catch up with our friends at COAST. Then shortly after I was back across with one of our funder, Vp plc, to do a spot of rock pooling and beach cleaning, led by COAST.

This is also the final month for FFI Scotland Team's longest standing colleague, Kerri Whiteside, who leaves us for pastures new. Kerri joined FFI back in 2014 and helped support CCN get off the ground. She will be sorely missed by all! Rebecca Plant, the Project Manager on the Scotland team, also heads on maternity leave shortly. I will be introducing both of their replacements in the next newsletter.

While the next couple of weeks will be busy with onboarding the new starts and getting them up to speed on all things CCN, I will also be coordinating the selecion proces for the CCN Advisory Group. I have already canvassed the Network for nominations and, during October, members will have the opportunity to agree the new Advisory Group. I will also be introducing the Advisory Group in a fiuture update.

CCN Forum updates
Aquaculture
We have learned that despite Friends of Loch Hourn's recent win against the planned expansion of Mowi's salmon farm in Loch Hourn, Mowi has submitted an appeal to overturn the planning decision.

Should the appeal be successful it would grant permission for a an increase in the farms production capacity by 10%. Friends of Loch Hourn are currently preparing to mobilise the community once again. Salmon aquaculture companies appear to believe that communities have no right to say "no".

Restoration
The CCN Restoration Forum met with the new NatureScot Marine Enhancement Advisor, Cass Bromley, as part of what will become an ongoing, informal opportunity for groups engaged with restoration to ask questions or raise concerns with NatureScot.

Marine plastics
The updated Marine Litter Strategy for Scotland was launched this week. Members of CCN Marine Plastics Forum will be meeting next week to discuss how it aligns with groups' priorities and where there are areas of concern. We will be feeding these into the forthcoming Marine Litter Strategy Steering Group meeting.
FFI's Marine Community Support Project Case Study (2011-2022)

Nature of Scotland Awards - Coasts and Waters Awards
We are hugely excited that local charity Seawilding has been shortlisted for a Nature of Scotland Award! Our finges are crossed they win. The award ceremony will be held in Edinburgh in November.
Community-led Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Project
Set up jointly by Fauna & Flora International and NatureScot, the Community-led Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Project aims to increase local participation in marine biodiversity surveying in Scotland. The project took a bit of a hiatus these last months due to staff changes, but we are pleased that Lucy Cotgrove has joined as the new Project Officer. She will be getting things back up and running shortly, so if you and your commnity are interested to take part drop her a line at lucy.cotgrove@nature.scot.

Wester Ross MPA Discovery Day
The Wester Ross Marine Protected Area Discovery Day, on the 14th October, aims to open a window into the MPA a wee bit wider, aiming to inspire other people to learn more about the wealth of marine life which inhabits this remote corner of the British Isles. Organised by the Wester Ross Fisheries Trust and others, there will be reports on recent scientific surveys of the MPA, lots of video footage of wild fish and other benthic critters, and opportunities to share other stories and take part in future investigations and exploration. The gathering will feature music and words from acclaimed storyteller Heather Yule, singer Joanie Bones, and other local performers.
  • Talks, videos and supporting activities, 10.00am – 4.30pm, Macphail Centre, Ullapool
