70+ AWESOME THINGS TO DO THIS MONTH

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Let’s not forget National Hispanic Heritage Month is this month, too. It celebrates Americans with heritage from Central and South American, the Caribbean, Mexico and Spain and runs through October 15. From food, festivals and performances, there are a lot of ways to celebrate around DC.

30 WAYS TO CELEBRATE

Take a C&O Canal boat tour.

Take a trip on the Georgetown C&O Canal

Georgetown’s waterfront is a popular destination but don’t overlook the C&O canal. After 10 years, Georgetown Heritage welcomed back boats to the waterway earlier this year. The canal was in operation for almost 100 years as a way to deliver goods between the Chesapeake Bay and the Ohio River.

Today, the boats are used for guided historical tours that bring this part of the neighborhood’s rich history to life. Rex Carneige, Director of Education and Partnerships for Georgetown Heritage (and our friend!) was recently featured on CBS Sunday Morning with . Check out the piece, here. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this is a unique experience you don’t want to miss. Tours run through October, Wednesday - Sunday.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you . . .

👀 What’s arriving at District Wharf: Phase 2.

How time flies! The Wharf developers will host a Phase 2 grand opening on October 12, 2022, exactly five years after the grand opening of Phase 1. Phase Two will add a marina, offices, hotel space, residential and retail space, and open spaces including three parks and public gathering spots. The waterfront destination has planned an anniversary celebration to herald the completion (almost!) of the project. Upon completion, you’ll be able to walk the mile-long waterfront from the fish market to Ft. McNair.

The skinny: Some properties will open before the October 12 date; others will open later in the year and into 2023.

  • Because developers enlisted interior designers for indoor and outdoor spaces, you’ll see elevated touches outside too. Look for outdoor chandeliers near the Pendry Hotel and a marble fountain near the Amaris condos.

  • Pendry, the waterfront hotel, will have three dining concepts of its own (expected to open Oct 26)

  • Amaris, a 96-unit, 12-story condo building, will have uber fancy amenities like an indoor saltwater lap pool, a “spa suite” with private treatment rooms and a car elevator to take residents’ vehicles down into the garage.

The scoop: Gordon Ramsey fans rejoice—word on the street is his Hell’s Kitchen eatery is expected to open in November with his fish and chippy to follow sometime later. In the meantime, there are plenty of episodes of his cooking reality shows (UK & US) to tied you over until the grand opening.

Where in DC?

George Washington University’s Textile Museum is a gem—it’s the only textile museum in the country. The museum is old (founded in 1925) but the building is new (opened in early 2015). Right now, there’s a truly amazing exhibit with an absolutely gorgeous selection of Korean fashion fro the traditional clothing (hanbok) of the last royal dynasty to today’s K-Pop artists and edgy streetwear styles. It also showcases fashions from pioneering Korean designers like Nora Noh, Lee Young Hee and Icinoo. The exhibit offers a fascinating look into how textiles mirror the social, spiritual, economic and aesthetic values of the societies that made them. Be sure to stop in the wonderfully curated gift shop for lovely and unique items. “Korean Fashion: From Royal Court to the Runway” runs through December 22. Admission is free.

📍: 701 21st St NW
