Autumn 2022 Upcoming Important Dates

  • Oct. 10: Last day of regularly scheduled classes - Autumn Session 1.
  • Oct. 11-12: Final exams - Autumn Session 1.
  • Oct. 13-14: Autumn Break - no classes, OSU offices open.
  • Oct. 17: Classes begin - Autumn Session 2
  • Oct. 21: 
    • Last day of 100% refund period - Autumn Session 2
    • Last day to add a course without instructor’s written permission - Autumn Session 2
    • Last day to add course using online registration - Autumn Session 2
  • Oct. 24-30: Spring semester registration begins for Graduate students

Mixed Methods: Diversifying Research to Introduce Multiple Perspectives of a Phenomenon

Hosted by the Educational Studies Diversity Committee. Part of the Educational Studies Diversity Lecture Series. Presented by Dr. Karen Beard, Dr. Tzu-Jung Lin, and Dr. Aarti Bellara. This presentation introduces mixed methods research as an avenue to diversify and coordinate multiple perspectives in research. We will illustrate the purposes and central premise of mixed methods, and discuss where mixing can occur through a brief analysis of two mixed methods studies.



Drinking from a Firehose: Strategies for Reading in Graduate School

Hosted by the Educational Studies. Open to all EHE graduate students. Reading in graduate and professional school can be overwhelming, like drinking from a firehose. In this workshop, you will learn how to stay on top of your reading list by reading smarter, not harder. We will share strategies for efficient reading, , developing an organized system for note-taking, and making a weekly reading and writing schedule.



 

I have no idea what I am doing! Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

The Student Wellness Center and Buckeye Careers have joined together to educate our graduate and professional student community about the barriers to success and how imposter syndrome can play a negative role in their personal and professional goals. In this interactive presentation, participants will define symptoms of stress, identify barriers to success, and work towards overcoming feelings of self-doubt by learning more in-depth about Imposter Syndrome and strategies to combat the negative inner critic.

Highlighting Our LGBTQ+ Students, Faculty, and Staff for National LGBTQ+ History Month

October is LGBTQ+ History Month and October 11 is National Coming Out Day! In recognition of the month, we are looking to highlight and celebrate our LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff and any research being done to serve LGBTQ+ populations throughout the month of October. Here's how you can help!

Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ community? Take over our social media for an upcoming Takeover Tuesday!

Have you done any research which serves LGBTQ+ populations that you have presented on and/or published? Share it as part of our Scholar Sundays!

University Leadership Listening Session and Town Hall on the Graduate Student Experience

The Graduate School and the Council of Graduate Students encourage all graduate and professional students to attend the University Leadership Listening Session and Town Hall on the Graduate Experience on October 20 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Ohio Union Performance Hall. Register by October 6 for a chance to meet, engage with, and ask questions of campus leaders who support and provide services specifically for graduate and professional students.

The Presidential Fellowship Nominations Are Open until October 12

The Presidential Fellowship is the most prestigious award given by the Graduate School. Recipients of this award embody the highest standards of scholarship in the full range of Ohio State's graduate programs. Nominations are currently being accepted for the Presidential Fellowship. To be considered, submit your nomination packet to ehe-es-gsc-chair@osu.edu by Wednesday, October 12.

Join a GSIRI Research Team!

Interested in getting some research experience? Curious about interdisciplinary work? There are 12 graduate student-led research teams currently looking for collaborators as they develop proposals to compete for $10,000 in grant funding from the Graduate Student Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (GSIRI).

Check out the GSIRI website for more in-depth descriptions of each project as well as the types of positions they’re looking to recruit for. If there’s a project you’d like to get involved with, reach out to the project leader to express your interest ASAP. Proposals will be due October 23rd, so the earlier you get involved the better!

Former GSIRI participants have described the process of proposal development, data collection, and general collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues as some of the most formative experiences they’ve had during their graduate education!

Higher Education and the Public Good: National Policy, Discourse, & The Power of Qualitative Research
Dr. Penny Pasque will discuss her research on what happens “behind closed doors” in national policy conversations about higher education for the public good. As director of QualLab, she will focus on the power of utilizing qualitative research toward social change. The findings and implications from this critical discourse analysis have been used in national policy conversations at the White House during the Obama Administration regarding DACA; to change higher education policy in Poland; with Graduate School Deans on equity and inclusion of racially minoritized graduate students; at Oxford University in connection to women in leadership meetings; and beyond.

Hosted by The Graduate Student Interdisciplinary Research Initiative (GSIRI). After creating or joining a GSIRI team, the next step is crafting a strong grant proposal. AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research Informational Webinar
Hosted by the American Educational Research Association. AERA announces its 2023-2024 AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research competition for graduate students. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). This program provides mentoring and funding support to develop research skills and conduct studies in education related fields and topics.
The Educational Studies student newsletter accepts announcements and events that pertain to the department’s graduate student community. The submission deadline is noon every Thursday.
