Letter from the Head of School

Dear RIS community,
I am writing to share that the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT) and the Ministry of Health (MoH), along with its local district office, have confirmed the ending of all COVID-19 restrictions. As of October 1, COVID-19 is reclassified from ‘a dangerous communicable disease’ to ‘a communicable disease under surveillance.'
The changes to our practices at RIS are listed below:
- 5-Day Isolation for Positive Cases:
With or without a medical certificate, 5 days of isolation will be required of community members who are positive for COVID. These individuals may return to school on day 6.
Individuals needing longer isolation time (for up to 10 days) will need to present the school with a medical certificate recommending so. If they feel well enough before day 10, they may return to school. (In such cases, social-distancing, hand-washing, and mask-wearing would be highly recommended.)
- Staff Absences
& Medical Certificates:
For a leave of absence due to COVID, staff members are required to submit a medical certificate to HR. The certificates will only serve to verify their diagnosis and validate absences.
- Student Absences
& Medical Certificates:
For extended absences to be excused, students may need to submit a medical certificate. Exemptions to this may occur on a case-by-case basis.
Please note, however, that high school students are required to attend 90% of their class meets to receive credit. In regards to extended absences due to COVID, high school students must submit a medical certificate if they are absent for over 10% of their class meets and require more flexibility.
- Wearing of Masks:
Masks will be optional outdoors.
Indoors, masks will be recommended but not required.
We have observed that most of our students continue to wear their masks on campus. Any student or member of our community who wishes to wear their masks will be supported completely. Our faculty and staff will not ask students to remove their masks, nor will they remind them that they do not have to wear them. We want our community members to feel comfortable and supported with what they choose to do. Rest assured we will continue to keep our community’s safety at the forefront of our decision-making process.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Dr. James O’Malley
Head of School / HS Principal
